Match Thread Rewind: Oldham v Port Vale

This was Granada. Central showed West Brom v Leicester. Vale had been on Central the previous Sunday at home to Birmingham.

I'm sure I've said it before but in the days when ITV was regional, Granada's coverage of Vale and Stoke was excellent considering most fans would have struggled to get a decent signal without risking doing a Rod Hull.

I bumped into Jim Beglin in the car park before the game, he signed my Birmingham programme from the week before, it was the first thing I had to hand - it had the directions to Boundary Park printed in it.

Pretty eventful game, a couple of penalties, a red card, and some late drama. This is the one where Stan forgot to pack the number one jersey so Musselwhite played all game wearing number 13.

Argh! Messed up on this one folks. I accidentally set the "premiere" for the wrong time so it's already gone live. "Gutted... sick as a parrot... no excuses..." etc...

You can still watch it (any time you want) but as it's premiered once I can't do it again so it's now simply live to watch

Anyhow... if you want to watch it this evening feel free and feel free to discuss the game in here. Just click play below

Talbot had a few sub appearances under his belt but that game was maybe only his second or third start in a Vale shirt.

That was a season of two halves. It took us a fair while to click, especially at home, but when we did we were some side.

If Talbot was allowed to drive forward without being asked to contribute too much with the ball, he was an effective player.

But if he was one of only two in midfield (as in tonight’s game) and the other was a defensive midfielder, it left us short of numbers and creativity and we tended to get overrun.

But in our brilliant season,  Rudge played him as a free man of 5 (including Guppy & McCarthy) in away games knowing there was cover behind.

But that then meant only one up front and as much as I liked Mills, he had to be left out as Naylor was better around his feet and could hold the ball up better.

But then at home we went 4-4-2 and Mills replaced Talbot. So both players had attributes but you couldn’t totally rely on either. But the genius that was Rudge found the answer.

Good to see how he cut out a media career for himself after that horrendous injury finished him. I quite liked him as a player. Good (or do I have to say cultured ?) left foot. Why do only left footers have a “cultured” foot ?
