Transfer Rumours Pre-Season

Looks like we may have signed Maynard after all. Especially with Carol’s twitter comments and now the sentinel article with Askey claiming that we are interested. Previously we had heard rumours of a big name striker, but with no substance. Now it’s suddenly mentioned by Tideswell, Carol and Askey himself in the Sentinel.

There's no doubt we would like to sign him. I very much doubt we have at this moment. It's rare Askey mentions a name in public so he will believe we have a reasonable chance. He's also a high profile player everyone knows is out of contract so he's probably decided there isn't much point in being cloak and dagger. I'm sure his agent has been in contact with clubs he feels can meet his demands already over the last couple of weeks.

JCR not sure the lad was released or was it just like Smudger Smith and at 24 out of contract up to the player if they sign or not and unlike Smith who signed Tutonda left Barnet a free agent....very quick and highly rated at Barnet considered one of their stand out players who could  easily move back to league football .....anyway we don't need a dedicated specialist left back when we have wingers/centre backs and right backs who can cover the vacancy....but certainly the story is one striker one keeper budget spent....and err wing it.

If a player is in demand like Maynard will be it takes time to get a deal done he's not desperate to sign and will be trying to get the best deal personally. This is where the revamped stadium, the gym and all the other improvements will play there part. If it does fall through Askey will have other targets and we now know that we are after a quality experienced and expensive striker who ever it may be

That is it. It taking time isn't concerning, its more actually a sign of growth in the club. We are chasing a player who is sort after, and in demand. Which means he would also look at other clubs see what they have and we have and weigh up his options.

They didn't offer any out of contract players a new contract I believe. He did post a goodbye message to fans recently. Speculation is he's off to Notts County.

Askey decided which positions he wanted to strengthen and was very open about it. You can disagree with him but he has picked pretty much the 24 players he wants. It's no different to being a manager with a budget in industry. With the money and personal available he's gone for the best squad he can. There are a few better specialist leftbacks than our options but there are an awful lot of very poor ones in league 2. Just because it says specialist leftback on a profile picture doesn't make a player a good leftback. Conversely there are a lot of decent rightbacks right now. Askey believes he's got the best squad with the funds he had available. Come May we will know if he was right.

Reading the Sentinel article on Maynard, does anyone have a clue about other targets should Maynard not sign?

Askey says: "there are one or two players now who haven’t got fixed up so they become more available to our wage bracket.”

But I've read on here that released strikers are few and far between.

Are there one or two players who a) may have been out of our budget and b) who are still available on a free?

Has Askey actually mentioned his name.

Well, he's chatted to someone called Nicky who played for Bury and Mansfield... 😉

"We have had a chat to Nicky. He is still available. He has other clubs after him. I think ideally he wants to stay local but his record, especially in the last few years, has been very good, at Bury and Mansfield. When someone is available like that, you have to be interested."

The other one with a localish connection is Omar Bogle. After that sruggling. Tom Nichols is on trial somewhere. Players like McCartan and Petty are still available but more 10s. Loads of natural 10s still without clubs, seems to be a move away from that kind of player.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that.  Posted at 18.30 and Askey says we are one of a number of clubs after him so he's clearly not signed.

Wouldn’t say that’s necessarily the case, if he’s agreed but club haven’t announced Askey would have to suggest it’s not done yet.

it also begs the question how interested is he?
