Transfer Rumours Pre-Season

The obvious question is, out of a fit Pope, Cullen, Rodney and Robinson, in what order would you put them for the centre forward position? With Maynard we would have been signing a definite starter.

If fit Cullen has already shown he can and will score goals. I'd start with him and use Pope and Robinson as impact subs. They are both absolutely fine options to have on the bench. I see Rodney as very much a work in progress. Maynard would have been great but it wasn't to be and we needed someone else up front to add competition. Robinson has pace and has a goal in him, his signing makes perfect sense.

So you're just going to completely ignore his record since then? I thought he was pretty toss when he was on loan here but we are a different side then than we are now, and hopefully he can show that he's a different player than he was. His record over the last few years is very respectable.

1 in 14 for Lincoln

11 in 70 for Southend

7 in 16 for Swindon is his only record of double figures since 18 in 67 across 2 years in 2011-2013 at Derby

11 in 28 at Colchester

I'm not sure about very respectable. Sporadic, yes. Deflating, yes. Do I hope he notches 25 and proves me wrong? Yes. Do I think fans are right to be a bit put out after what we could have had? Yes. Do I think we should all be mercilessly slagging Maynard off for 90 minutes on May 8th? Yes.

It is a genuinely dubious signing. Forget all the “oh he was poor in the league above and is good in league 2” rubbish.

I watched the league 2 playoffs. He is a major reason why Colchester did not win that game. He had about 9 chances and fluffed them all, including some utter sitters he blasted over.

He isn’t a good player, very wasteful in teams that created a lot.

Yes, 4 years ago in the division above. Proven goals at this level, top signing imo.

Sorry are we saying League One is the Champions League now?

I hope so. But I think it's perfectly reasonable for fans to be disappointed.

I will save the 'HMS Plss the league' photo I was going post on here when Maynard signed for the January window instead.

A lesson is getting your hopes up... Without the Maynard option, I would have been very happy with this.

As it is, I would have preferred Maynard, but this makes sense to me so if its good enough for Askey its good enough for me. Probably ensures greater harmony in the striking squad too.

Yes he wasn't brilliant 4 years ago, but he has a 1 goal in every 2.4 game record in league 2 recently. We were a different team back then in a higher league and he will have developed as a player.

People will moan their sacks off, and that's been made worse by knowing we came close to Maynard.

I just hope people are intelligent enough to not turn him into an instant whipping boy and drain his confidence... It doesnt help him, it doesnt help the club.

Since when has 18 goals in his last 44 games been classed as anything other than quite impressive? Cullen's overall record wasn't any better when he signed for us and I don't recall people crying over him signing. Some people were even doing it with Maynard - His age and injury record etc. Robinson is a decent signing and shouldn't be judged so much on 14 games for us 4 years ago. He's done well and scored goals since then and in a play-off chasing side there's no reason for that not to continue with us.

Not quite what we all expected, but what can we do when Mansfield come in with a better offer and a goal bonus? As far as I’m aware, Vale and Maynard had agreed terms but Mansfield came in at the last minute. Vale were right to leave him, in my opinion.

Theo could turn out to be a tidy signing. His record over the past two season suggests he can very much cut it at this level. Many people will judge this signing on his short spell with us four years ago. There is nothing wrong with that, but just back the lad instead of knocking him. You’ve got to remember that was in a higher division.

I look forward to seeing Theo play again, and I wish him all the best!

So Robinson could possibly be 3rd choice at times ,where as Maynard would be undisputed first choice. You’ve answered why people are disappointed. To go up signing starters is important.

People make me laugh on this website , slagging a player off who wants to play for port Vale while lording over Maynard who doesn't . Seen his you tube interview where he states he and the club are in a better place than last time he was here . Oh his goal stats are poor , have you seen popes directly before joining us ? shocking !!

I think its not a bad signing and any signing is a risk , but hey don't let that get in the way of a knee jerk reaction .

welcome Theo and I hope you make some on here look like proper melts!!  Viva Revolution !!!

Askey wants players who really want to play for the club and want to be here. Clearly Maynard was more motivated by money than anything else. That's not a slight on him - I can't say I blame him with how things are right now so good luck to him.

Robinson has done well in the last few years, has pace and can also play out wide too so offers a bit of versatility which is always important in a squad. He will be chomping at the bit and hopefully he will surprise one or two.

If he's genuinely improved so much and been a big part of Colchester team, why didn't they sign him when he came available?

How do you know they didn't? And if they didn't there's a hundred reasons why they either wouldn't or couldn't which is no slight on him as a player or how he did for them.
