Transfer Rumours Pre-Season

I made my thoughts on the Smith deal dragging on quite clear although in fairness that was a different situation to this.

I'm not very impressed when players and agents play clubs off against each other because the time wasted on it interferes with getting a deal done for an alternative player.

We've offered this numbnut a brilliant deal, at a much bigger club than Mansfield, with an enormously positive/happy fanbase and club culture, with a squad of tightknit, happy players, and a 35 minute commute.

If he wants to trade that in for a 2 hour commute to tinpot, financially doped Mansfield, to finish bottom half again for an extra few hundred quid a week then more fool him.

Carol made a point of only wanting players who fit a particular mould. That is, aligned with the qualities and principles of the club. This behaviour so far doesn't seem to match that very well.

Have to decide now if to match it or if we can get better value elsewhere with our other targets then we should say decide by 5Pm tomorrow or we are going to go elsewhere.

As Doha rightly says we are a club on the up and a great place to be or he can go to a smaller club throwing money everywhere but making no progress in doing so.

With Maynard at his stage of his career it will simply be about money more than anything else. He only has two or three years left. So if Mansfield are offering a fair bit more than is he will undoubtedly re-sign for them even if he doesn't believe they are going anywhere as a club. He would have been a good and ideal signing but it doesn't seem like it was meant to be. But how nice it feels to actually be strongly linked with this type of player!

Surely though the idea of winning promotion at the end of your career may seem appealing. I can understand the financial side in some ways. However being somewhere with a buzz must also be appealing.

You would like to think so, but the way things are in the world now especially I should imagine most players will put money above anything else. Maybe if Mansfield were offering just a hundred or a couple of hundred pound more every month he would go for the side he sees as having the most potential. But if they are offering £1000+ it would be a no brainer in his thinking.

No matter what happens we have tried our best to get him he has been to the club and seen what we are about and what the owners are expecting to achieve. It's out of our hands now there will always be clubs who will pay more than us and if Mansfield are offering some kind of ridiculous F.A. cup appearance bonus or some other way around the salary cap then there's not a lot we can do about it. But how wonderful is it to know that we are after this caliber of player.

The majority of pro footballers are hard wired to think money, that is why some are prepared to go non league, what division they are in doesn't really come into it, thats why some lads are prepared to play in Premier League U23 sides, they look at it as a short career and you make hay while you can.

Our average attendance was only 400 higher than Mansfield, so the difference isn't that big. Mansfield have brought in some good players again so will believe they can at least match what they did two years ago.

I think we can take it as read if Maynard doesn't sign tomorrow he's not coming. It will be unfortunate but a lot of us pick our jobs largely for the salary. If Pope wasn't banned at the start of the season I wouldn't have been unhappy with just the three strikers. Cullen at his best was as good as Maynard last season. It would have been nice but it's not catastrophic.

With a lot of players at our level I would agree. However someone like Maynard has probably had at least 4 years earning at 10 grand a week (half a mill a year or over 250 grand a year after tax) if not considerably more.

If he has anything about him and invested just a small percentage of it he should already have his retirement more than sorted. An extra 50000 shouldn't really be of any significance to him.

He isn't in the same boat as most of the players at our level who at the height of their short career earn 50 - 150 grand a year.

The problem is if he has spent every penny trying to keep up with his peers as I am sure a lot of footballers foolishly do.

I've asked this before and got a few names but I think it's worth asking again... if Maynard is ruled out and Hope stays at Swindon, are there any other names in the frame? Askey said he had spoken to a few players.

I guess it's either free agents who are experienced strikers or any out of favour whom we may be interested in (i.e. Whitehead had a year left on his contract but it was cancelled so we could sign him)

So far suggestions have included Omar Bogle (who would be a top quality addition if our budget stretches to him IMO) and Brett Pitman (would he move though, he's very Southern based) but I'm just wondering if anyone wants to suggest any more?

I know we have offered Maynard a good deal, but could we really afford someone like Pitman.
