Transfer Rumours Pre-Season

The age of all outfield trialists is noticable.  There will be a premium to pay for players who are young enough to count as under 21. Squad size of 22 is right on the limit of what a team can expect to get through a season with. We had one of the smallest squads in league 2 last season and we still used 29 players. January will be interesting as it will be one in one out for most clubs. Maybe a lot of player swops in the next window. I'd expect a lot more youth players to get game time in the EFL Trophy.

We need to set up a development squad with the money saved off the budget to try and push through some good young cheap talent because at the moment nothing is coming through the youth set up as all the good players are going to premier league clubs at an early age. I think most of the 3 or 4 lads sold would have been turning pro this year instead we signed zero

On the Burgess interview yesterday it was stated that 2 of the youth team midfield players are in and around the first team, though it didn't give names. The group that just left was an obvious disappointment. I'm guessing that this was a large part of the justification for bringing in Sinclair. They would have been aware of the implications of a salary cap by then. A smaller squad may be a bit of a lifeline to some young players released by bigger clubs and Trickett-Smith who probably would have been further on the fringes of the team if we were able to bring in 2 or 3 more over-age players.
