I'm fairly confident Smith won't sign.

Even with the current situation, a lot of League 1 clubs are still in a position to sign players, and signing a 24 year old with over 250 professional appearances, top levels of consistency, and a near flawless injury record is a no-brainer.

The good news is that Legge played every minute this season just gone, and, a few clumsy mishaps aside, was still a good defender. Brisley was pretty good in his half-dozen games, with a MOTM performance away at Northampton, so can clearly contribute if needed.

I still thin, after the forward position, a longer term option at centre back is a necessity. Legge and Brisley will both be in their 30s. Crooks is still young, and feels like more of a centre back than a left back, but isn't ready yet.

Some released options: Krystian Pearce, George Taft, Nathaniel Knight-Percival, Nathan Pond, Luke Prosser, Will Boyle, Harry Davis

Obviously Pond and Pearce are getting on, and Prosser is 31.

I think Taft or Boyle are the pick of the bunch; both in their mid 20s with a lot of games under their belt. Cheltenham fans want to keep Boyle and he might yet receive a contract offer if they sort their finances out with this playoff fiasco, but right now he will become a free agent at the end of June and can start negotiating with other clubs.

Boyle is the same age as Smith, didn't play loads this season due to the form of Cheltenham's exceptional back three, and would be a perfect fit alongside Legge, ahead of Brisley. He's 6"3, and captained them in the last game before lockdown against us.

Don't know about anyone else but if Danny Whitehead has been seen at the ground and say Dino Visser were to be considered as the backup keeper with loan deals somehow sorted for Clark and Taylor then the squad short of that striker signing looks well balanced...

.................................................................................Brown/Visser.....................................................................................................

Gibbons/Mills.................................Brisley/Smith...............................Legge/Crooke.................Montano/Clark

...............................Whitebread/Burgess.......................joyce/Oyeleke...............Conlon/Taylor......................

..............Amoo/Browne..........................................Rodney/Cullen/Pope............................Worrall/Hurst....

KInda like the look of that.....keeper/centre back/holding midfield solid.......and both the left side triangle and right side triangle look strong and mobile......the question is that Pope through age and Cullen through injury record cannot be thought as regulars and almost could be considered part time unfortunately while Rodney is a development project...so should that striker signing be an experienced first choice goalscorer if possible or another younger development striker who like Rodney will learn so much this season training with Pope and Cullen.....so perhaps a perfectly formed 24 man squad with good competition in every position and allow young Cambell-Gordon to go out on loan for the season and if Trickett-Smith is not in the managers plans then just see if the lad can find a new club in the conference.

geoff1 good spot on the spelling mistake should read Whitehead the best thing since Whitebread.......but is not Askey looking for three more permanent signings and someone said Whitehead was seen at the club so could be a possible midfield signing and Dino Visser was just used as an example of a possible goalkeeper signing being available and recently playing local at Crewe....then last a striker.

Askey will still need a couple of loan signings and will probably try to get Clark and Taylor back on loan or look elsewhere...the excercise was just to look at how the squad was going to look and probably a small but balanced squad of say 24 with cover and competition for every position and with a few players being versatile even with some injuries and loss of form a small squad is probably the plan.

So a keeper/midfielder/striker and possible a couple of loans seems a reasonable summary.

Good point so perhaps Whitehead could be a loan signing and Askey has mentioned Clark as a possible but maybe not before january so that still means a keeper and a midfielder and striker signed permanent methinks the budget is going to be tight and maybe the goalkeeper will be inexperienced and the midfielder and striker perhaps youngsters without experience and maybe like Hurst and Rodney essentially development players...which is risky with a small squad however as they say Askey doesn't need money just give Askey time and both Hurst and Rodney could prove to be very good prospects and (in short in Askey we trust) because another striker and midfielder who even if young will be mobile, high energy and technically good.....both young Burgess and Browne have quality and will improve season upon season.....would love the possibility of the squad above and going for promotion but maybe it's a longer project but  certainly top ten and a good go at the play offs is on the cards.

Askey has said what he wants (midfield, keeper, forward), whether they are loan players or permanent signings. Taylor and Clark would almost certainly cost Vale the same or more than a permenant signing. Part of the rationale for signings Mills was his wage is significantly less than the contribution for Clark. I'm sure if the find someone at the same point Clark or Taylor were at when we first signed them with a minimal wage contribution he may well sign someone extra. The question is the short-term is does he gamble on Taylor being made available or take someone else who definitely is.

Worth watching back the two Salford games on iPlayer. Whitehead was poor. If you compare his performance in The Trophy game with Trickett-Smith's against Newcastle he doesn't show up well. Put 3 or 4 decent diagonal balls into the box over 2 games and one run in the league game. He may be better in a 3 and he does have an ok right foot.  Seems to have a knack of being in the right place 2 seconds too late when attacking and defending. On those 2 games he doesn't look a player who would be any better than squad players we already have. Salford probably would like to offload him rather than loan him out. I doubt we would want to pay him what Salford do. Might be a deal to be done with some kind of Salford payoff.  One would hope he'd play better for us than he did against us last season.

Have you genuinely gone back and watched 2 games just because we’ve been linked to someone?!?

I've  watched every game from last season since March 😣 Must be honest I'd skipped the EFL Trophy defeat but decided it to watch it last night, partly to complete the season partly to have a look at Whitehead.

JCR......colour me impressed such dedication certainly worthy of the title OVF Chief Scout.

So conflicting opinions on Whitehead (which has never happened with any player before) from outstanding to just above average however if as stated Whitehead has been seen at the club and has played for Askey before then it must come down to contracts and wages.

Anyway if it is not necessarily three permanent signings plus possibly a couple of loans  but just three signings permanent or loan that is a very small squad.

So a keeper/midfielder/striker......If Oyeleke has another injury struck season and Joyce isn't getting any younger then there is Burgess and Conlon plus one new signing......if Pope can't play two a week or a full 90 minutes and Cullen has another injury struck season with Rodney being essentially a young development player plus one new signing and of course a keeper....it does seem that given the injury record of Oyeleke and Cullen and the age of Pope and Legge that a 22 man squad is risky and a couple of extra loan players in short an extra midfielder and cover a left back could be essential.

Of course left back Cambell-Gordon could have a break through season at 19 and Trickett-Smith could make up the numbers in midfield but if it is only three new signings loan or permanent then it has to be a decent experienced keeper incase god forbid Brown got injured and and experienced midfielder of a good age who can go straight into the first team and an experienced goalscorer who can play regularly and lead the line.
