Art - Is it all that ?

A lot of the art in modern art is the bs description they use to justify the scribble they just framed. I know a few artists, some are good, some like the idea of being an artist and use bs to cover for lack of talent. It’s so subjective though they get away with it, and other pretentious artist wannabes just reinforce each other that there is some deep meaning in the smudged scribble.
There is that, and the fact that it’s also widely used to launder money.

A few years ago we went to New York and visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  There was one painting there which I swear could have been done by my nephew's four year old lad.  It was by Jean Miro.

restrictedI took a photograph of it with my better half standing beside it doing a thumbs down.  I have a very good friend who is an Art teacher.  We used the pic to make her a birthday card with the caption, "The judge from Oakhill awards Miro nul points"!

I went to the Banksy exhibition near me a few years and although some of the show was cleverly done it was the most capitalistic exhibition I have ever been to which goes totally against what Banksy is supposed to stand for. We paid for the tickets online and was given a time slot of 8pm - 10pm and then there will be a band on. We got there at 7:45, got in at 8:15, bought a drink in the bar and was then told we couldn’t walk round with our drinks, so we got to see the first thing at 8:45 after queuing again, at 9:20 they announce the show was closing in 20 minutes. So we got to about a third of the show but hey we always had the band so we asked where the band will be to only be told that there was no band and it was all in the advertising. The programme we bought was £10 and was selling for £50 on eBay.
Left the show, went the pub and wished I’d never bothered, massive waste of time and money, felt ripped off.

Miro does a lot of the stuff that the Spanish tourist board use - bright orange sun and pale blue sky on a white canvas - that kind of thing. But it's original and not been done before, hence it's value. But in some ways it looks like the work of a 10 year old. Yet, he did it first! I'm no admirer of his work. If you want Spanish artists then Goya is the top dog for me (look at his portrait work and how he uses light and colour) followed bu Velazquez. El Greco also did a lot of his work in Spain. Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights is in the Prado and quite pornographic for something that looks very modern yet was painted around 1500!!

At the end of the day, it's about originality and supply and demand.

Last summer we visited Aix-en-Provence, a lovely city in the south of France. You can do the Cezanne trail and visit his house, studio, and place of burial.  I recommend it 100%. It's a beautiful city and very easy to walk around. No bus or tube needed, just a good pair of shoes!

Here's the latest addition to Trafalgar Sq's 4th plinth, all paid for by the "Arts Council of England" funded obviously by the tax payers, which is of course another lefty quango.

Anybody else think someone is taking the P out of London ?

Jesus wept. So this piece of art was funded by the labour government a decade ago? Is there anything you won’t use to get yourself all agitated about ‘lefties’.

Taken 10 years to get that knocked together ? Somebodies been had..... Lefties strike again, it must have taken them 6 years to decide what to bodge together and spend someone else's money.

The Guardian report..

" Phillipson said she came up with the idea for it in 2016, the year of the EU referendum and Donald Trump winning the US presidential election. For me, we’ve been at a point of some kind of entropy for a long time. When I was thinking of this work there was a sense for me of an undercurrent that was already there … this feels like a continuation of that.”

By the way " He " would have wept seeing that, your quite right.

I’m not debating how s**t the art is. I’m asking why you’re still blaming the left for things you don’t like despite the tories being I. Charge of the nations purse strings for a decade.

It is the duty of a government to review projects, which they had 10 years to do, or did they leave it to the Secret Service.

Some fair comments above, I think.

Originality is a huge part of why an artist gets to the top of the tree but I guess most mortals like me (who can paint equally as badly with a foot as with a hand) tend to appreciate more something that we could never aspire to do, as well as something with aesthetic value. I know it goes back to the individual and matters of taste but isn't it a bit like football? The players we admire the most are the ones who can do what we can't do - dribble with the ball, score spectacular goals, get you out of your seat with their skill and ability, rather than the man markers and destroyers. Although of course every team needs its water carriers.

I can put some blobs of paint on a canvas, pile up a few tyres or write some graffiti on a wall. But I can't paint like Rembrandt or Goya, or produce a sculpture of David like Michelangelo, and I know which form of art I prefer.

There are a few "modern" sculptures around the City these days on various roundabouts and hillsides but very few of them inspire me. I still prefer the traditional statues of folk like Bennett and Wedgwood and Mitchell, not forgetting Banks, Matthews and our own Roy Sproson.

I guess my post is a long winded, rambling way of saying that I agree with Geo and Fosse!!

if you're interested in art but find a lot of the discourse around it alienating then the white pube can be a good way in- although since lockdown most of their reviews have been on games. still interesting writing though and they have a different artist in residence on their website every month (July's one: https://www.thewhitepube.co.uk/david-parnell)
