Get rid of transfer window League 2

Given the financial constraints due to COVID do supporters agree that it would make  sense to abandon all restrictions on signing new players during the season.  It would allow managers to forget about having cover for all positions and start the season with smaller squads, knowing that injuries could be covered as and when they occur

No it stopped big clubs hoovering up players from smaller clubs in the league during the season to damage rivals and improve their own promotion prospects. Personally I'd do away with January. Even talk of offers from a bigger club impacts some players performance.

Absolutely not. It’d make the season worthless. The current transfer window gives all 92 clubs the same opportunity to purchase players ready for the new season. If some pick up serious injuries,  turn out to be an expensive flop or a bad apple, tough. Those are the gambles we all take. It’s unfair to basically reward those with ultimately poor recruitment by allowing them multiple opportunities to just keep stockpiling players or poaching those better performing players from rivals. Months of hard work ruined by a bigger club taking away their in form players, just to sit amongst their substitutes. That’s what January is for, not October or November, if you’ve hit a sticky patch or you’ve several injuries throughout the squad.

My view is that the transfer windows are a bad idea full stop.

It encourages teams to sign players which they don’t actually want or need because of the “ just in case” scenario which inevitably never happens.

Also, prices for players go through the roof because they are all available for transfer at the same time for a limited period only which adds a premium.

You therefore end up with vastly inflated squads, many of whom will never play because they were only signed “just in case”

Meanwhile, they all need paying.

The increase in squad sizes is due to 2 factors. The transfer window has had an impact. The increase in substitutes progressively from 1 up to 7 has also had an impact.

The summer window isn't impacting wages in the lower leagues. There is always an excess of supply with players released from the top 2 leagues. The fact so many players are available in the summer tends to keep wages down in the lower leagues. Football isn't a single labour market. The market for Eoin Doyle wages is 200k a year for 3 seasons because he is unique. That doesn't mean Will Atkinson will get a new club on a similar deal as there are a lot of players of, broadly, his ability available,  whereas Doyle has a unique skillset. Players moving within a season have always got longer and higher deals because they don't have to agree to a move and the are "in demand," because someone needs them. Where January and being able to sell all season may "help" smaller clubs is richer clubs will pay a higher fee for scarce resources if they are need of a player in a particular position during the season. Smaller clubs will also struggle to pay fees for under contract and richer clubs with larger squads (so able to offload during the season) aren't going to act as charities and will expect bigger loan fees or transfer fees. Part of the reason so many loans happen on the last day of the Jan window is bigger clubs stop holding out for loan fees they've asked for throughout the window to get players out for experience.

Askey seems to be planning for 23 players next year. Thats only 5 players not in the matchday squad. Rudge had 17 or 18 players at times but matchday squads were 12 or 14. So its not clear which change had the biggest impact.

5 subs will continue to be allowed next season, so that will mean having 9 subs and a matchday squad of 20.

Isn't it up to individual leagues to decide if thet want that option? My reading was it was an allowed option on a league by league basis.

Just had another look and you are right - "World football's governing body says it is now up to individual leagues and competitions to decide if they wish to continue allowing five substitutions." (taken from BBC)

Thanks. You'd hope league 2 pass that idea by. Otherwise giving Ryan Lloyd another 12 months isn't a bad idea.

This thing about so many subs drives me crackers.

If this story about allowing 5 substitutions during a game comes to fruition, then potentially we could have 10 separate stoppages over 90 minutes just to accommodate this facility. There’s very little flow to the games as it is with players feigning injury etc. without any further unnecessary  delays.

But you just know that in a tight game, the side leading will make one sub at a time every two minutes near the end to try and “kill” the game. That will be fun.

Lets all hope and prey that everyone’s friend Graham Westley is not back in the game some time soon, otherwise we’ll all miss the last bus home. Mask or no mask.
