So is he supposed to keep accepting contracts and stay at vale until someone actually buys him? Nobody wanted to pay a fee, he owes us nothing and we owe him nothing. His contract has ran out, he's done his time professionally and now he wants to move on.

We don't have a right to know whats going on with the wait either. Smith and Askey will surely keep in discussions and sooner or later Askey will tell Nathan he needs to sign or it will be too late.

Whatever happens, all the best Smithy!

You beat me to it. I agree 100% 👏👏👏

Opinion: good bye Nathan Smith and good luck

Rob Fielding is bemused why some Port Vale fans feel that defender Nathan Smith has somehow “let the club down” by wanting to leave.

Rob Fielding writes…

I can’t understand some fans who are criticising Nathan Smith for having the temerity to want to leave Port Vale and play at a higher level.

I was about to use the phrase he’s been a “magnificent servant” and then I realised how loaded that phrase is.

Absolutely spot-on Rob.  For any sensible fan, there's really nothing more to add to to your rational, objective and well-balanced summary. Good luck to the lad.

Surely any footballer must have the ambition to play in as high a league as they possibly can. Smithy has stated that it is a difficult decision, Vale have looked after him since his teens and he has given Vale 110% commitment. He has not rejected the offer because he would gladly stay if that career move did not materialise during the difficult months ahead. All clubs will be carefully looking at their finances at the moment as I am sure there is another Wigan / Bury waiting to happen. If he can achieve a Championship move then no Vale fan can decry him of that chance. Best wishes Smithy, wherever you may be next season.

Bolton Wanderers favorite's apparently !

They're obviously chucking money around (supposedly signing Eoin Doyle), but even so, wasn't one of the main reasons that Smith was likely to leave Vale because Championship and League 1 clubs were interested in him?

Be a bit of a let-down if he just ends up in the same division (albeit on 3 or 4 times the money).

Thanks for the reminders folks. After today's news this article hasn't aged well!

For my next opinion piece I am going to write about how Port Vale won't get promoted next season 😉

There’s still this season  rob, how about an article on stokes great escape.
