Sentinel: PFA warns of 'unlawful' salary cap as Port Vale and League Two consider options

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I cannot understand the PFA's argument?

Surely players are employed via a series of fixed term contracts. If clubs have to abide by a salary cap they will simply wait till a player's contract runs out and becomes a free agent. They won't lower an existing deal but just offer a new, lesser paid contract in line with the salary ruling.

In what way is the above unlawfully cutting players' salaries?

I just don't get the PFA's angle at all - it just smacks of a rich CEO trying to continue to rake the money in (in that you can charge more expensive union subs to richer players so any salary reduction would adversely affect the PFA's coffers).

For an organisation dedicated to the welfare of its players, the motivation for this is difficult to understand. The proposal for the salary cap was made so that clubs could survive the financial difficulties they face because of the pandemic and, by so doing, safeguard the employment of their staff, primarily the players. The PFA's action will make matters even worse than they are now.

Then, on top of it, will the PFA will take clubs to court for alleged unlawful behaviour, further jeopardising their finances?
