A Salford Preview plus a reasonably long chat with Chris Lines!

We are joined by friend of the show Jordan to give his alternative view of the Cambridge game as the 3 of us were relatively positive Saturday. Then we quickly preview the Salford game, none of us backing us to win up there Tuesday! Following that, we bring you our chat with Chris Lines, who talks about his journey in football before, during and after Vale along with views on his former manager, and new Vale manager Darrell Clarke. Not to be missed!

I wonder what that mystery message from Canada was? My guess is that Stu was just doing a minute's silence for all the fans who had died of boredom watching the Stevenage game

I'm not sure what they said, but Ben Affleck's new film was being filmed in our office block, so it was a bit of a ballache all week! Never thought after working in Leek for 8 years, I'd be dodging film crew to get in and out of the office!

Salford review is available!

We chat after a desperately disappointing evening as Vale fall limply to Salford. Vale unfortunate to go in behind at the break, but then do virtually nothing to get back into the game in the second half. Rants aplenty about the lineup, some of the individual performances as well as other topics that leave us in a position where we're looking to see if Harrogate have done us a favour or not.

We're averaging 0.68 points per game over the past 22 games. We accumulated more points in our opening 9 games of the season than we have done in the past 22.

0.68 points per game would get you just over 31 points in a whole season. It's worse than relegation form.

If we continue at the same rate for the remainder of the season we will finish on 41/42 points which will see us down.

Tough game Saturday which I can't see us getting anything from despite us beating them at our place. We then have 3 x home games on the spin which could determine our entire season and future as a club. Simply huge.

Bit of anger and frustration came across on your pod, which is fully understandable.
We are really in a rut and never seen the reset button pressed so much.

The basics are missing and we should have enough experience on the pitch to put it right.
As you rightly  point out, be it injuries, recruitment, late appointment of a manager has all contributed to pi$$ poor performances.

At least I look forward to your pods, but like Bezza, feeling very scared of the consequences.

Let’s hope for some improvement soon!

I think like you, I'm just frustrated at why it's going wrong. I've reflected on the game yesterday and I don't think we were far wrong actually. Vale were more than equal to Salford before Gibbo went off. Then they had a good 10 mins, we switched off defensively and that was the game. I find it crazy that we couldn't create anything second half at all and that's my main issue. Heads were down, we were shocking and never worried them again. How can you be like that when you are a goal down and are staring defeat in the face again? I would, as I have been saying for a few weeks that the character of the squad is poor. They can't seem to pull themselves together after a setback and I ultimately think that's an issue. Players like Conlon, have proven that they can play at this level, so why are they so up and (more regularly) down? That's character, not quality for me. We spoke to Linesy and he said that Clarke has the managerial ability to pull the players together and motivate them. Well, we need that now so let's see what he can do.

I had a rant about strikers again. And I've never been more sure that I'm right about that. We've got Guthrie, Cullen and Robinson who are probably on at least 3k a week between them. Surely we would have been better to pool that cash and get one guy in who is getting 20+ goals a season. If I look back, that just looks the wackiest decision of the lot, considering we were playing one main striker under Askey.

Hi Stupers! I take the point about the strikers. To have six on the books at the moment seems top heavy!

Also, are we missing midfield creativity and goals from that department? Woman creates but we don’t have a killer ball player in the side, regardless of who is up front.

Goal contributions from centre backs appears to have dried up and full back goal tally is non existent.

So, if we are becoming more defensively sound, where are the goals coming from, particularly with our current injury list?

Oh for players of the past!

I know we eat up’s and down’s in football and it feels like toothache at the moment, but I was thinking of Chesterfield, semi finalists in the league cup and now in the National league. I hope that we escape the drop!

Maybe to get more quality out of our current squad, this is where the coaching staff have to earn their money.

I know some find Clarke a bit outspoken but he's spot on about the weaknesses in the squad. It is unbalanced. We've never had a midfield physical presence since Grant left and are soft centred. No real leader out there. Heads drop - in part because we've got a lot of young lads. Everyone knows we badly needed at least one defender in January but we didn't do owt about it (apart from the young boy on loan). Leaving the managerial appointment too late was another error.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. And when confidence plummets it's tough to get it back.

I think our best (only) chance of winning games lies in us getting a tune out of the likes of Pope, Amoo, Oyleke and Worrall. Their experience, trickery and physicality might give us a bit extra and get us across the line.

But it's a poor squad. The spine is badly creaking compared to last year, Askey's signings were appalling generally, and we've got far too many crocks in the squad (at least 4 of them). None of these things are Clarke's fault. I'll judge him after a couple of windows and a pre-season but it's going to be a nail biting finish. We've been far too complacent since last October.

I am surprised by the lack of creativity this season. It's been poor, but I have mentioned quite a few times that I think there's a problem not with the final ball, but with the 2nd to final ball (The pass to the creator). We are pish at passing, putting in a position for someone to run on to.

I think we will drag some goals from somewhere to win some games, mainly because we're looking ok defensively and after Cheltenham, the run of games eases up a bit in terms of top of the table sides so hopefully we should improve. But this season has been a massive disappointment, and you're looking at the new manager to turn it around.
