I’d like to see the Crowley brothers. But there’s no way any manager is going to get the time. Look at what happened with Aspin and Askey, even though they had initially achieved their short term targets, as soon  as a bad run comes around (which it will in any managerial reign) then the pitch forks and lit torches are out in force.

Once again, the failing of managers is blamed on the fans.

Maybe John Askey should have signed some good players. That would have been wise.

You’re obsessed with this blaming the fans comment.

The fans had no patience when a bad run came along.  That’s a fact. The same will happen with the next manager when they have a bad run. There’s no use pretending otherwise, that is unless you believe that if the next manager who goes on a run like Askeys he will (for some reason) be afforded  the time and patience of our fans?

I just find it bizarre that John Askey, a man paid to manage a football team with superb owners, gets less blame for failure than the fans do who didn't like losing and couldn't see any long-term progress as an ageing squad got older and substandard players were signed en masse, in a season in which top 7 was the expectation.

It really baffles me. He should have just been better at his job. Not the fans' fault. By implying the fans threw a hissy fit, you're also implying Carol was swayed by the fans kicking off, and not her own rational judgement, which is very harsh.

It's very easy to present fans unsatisfied with John Askey as impatient kneejerkers, but I think it's a disservice to many fans who think long and hard, and have a good understanding about Port Vale.

The disappointment with Askey wasn't just results, but a combination of a lack of improvement elsewhere; late goals, tactical inflexibility, recruitment. These things combined to give us an old squad in free fall.

Of course, some reacted emotionally to another lost season (as any fanbase who had a similarly poor recent history would do), but I do find it wearisome that if you don't like being 16th with an old squad and a 'stuck in his ways' coach, you're an impatient wailer with no long-term thinking, and not someone who gave the matter just as much consideration as someone who wanted Askey to stay, but merely came up with a different conclusion.

OK, so during a normal year, that might create a toxic atmosphere inside the stadium, transmitting itself over to the players. It might also mean lower attendances affecting the club financially.

But this year, what's the worst thing the fans have done? Wrote a few mean things on the internet?

Out of those three, who do you think it will be?!

Flickers. Would be chuffed enough with that to be honest.

Seems quite possible at this point!

Danny Cowley for me. If I wanted Port Vale to be a club with talented , hard working players  who don’t down tools and behave like spoiled brats , and a sense of community about it, coupled with a manager who will get respect the minute he walked in the door ,  I would go through a brick wall to get him. It doesn’t sound like he will be the one , and maybe he he’s not interested, but I’m still hoping .
If he is hired, Port Vale FC will be transformed, and we could see  the good times returning to Vale Park. UTV

Good call mate, he certainly would get the juices flowing! Looks unlikely to be him as you say, but what an appointment it would have been!

Askey was in charge for 23 months.

Aspin for 16 months (as good as).

What is the average tenure for managers in League 2?

How long, on average, do other clubs fans go before "the pitch forks and lit torches are out in force"? Are we particularly different to other clubs?

Longest serving managers

The above link shows all the current managers in the top 92, in the current climate I think you are probably doing well as a manager if you manage to last 3-4 seasons.

Looking at that list, Askey was the 6th longest-serving manager in League 2 at the time of his sacking.

Seems that "pitch forks and lit torches" are regularly "out in force" among clubs across the country then, and not just here at Port Vale!........you'd never have thought so, according to some on here who can't wait to shout down anyone that dares to offer a critical opinion, and make out that Vale fans are the most destructive moaners in the League! (that's not a dig at PV1973 specifically, who is one of the better posters on here IMO)
