Heysel...35 years tonight.

Just realised that it's the 35th anniversary of the Heysel Stadium disaster,39 football fans went to a game and didn't come home, always seems to go under the radar along with the Bradford fire never gets the press coverage I think it deserves, it should never be forgotten.

I often wonder if the authorities had Heysel at the back of their minds when that other awful tragedy happened at Hillsborough, football could be a risky thing to do on a Saturday afternoon thank goodness things have improved.

Heysel stadium wasn't suitable for that level of game but had become regularly used. In stadiums like that safety can only be achieved by  excellent behaviour and courtesy among the fans. It was far from that. Yes it was a factor in my opinion in prejudicing the proper and effective investigation of Hillsborough. But there were other factors too that had given people from Merseyside a bad name at that time, didn't help and caused a cognitive bias; the reports must be true etc.

The most surprising thing about this event was that the actual match itself was even allowed to take place.

The terrible scenes of violence happened before kick off, yet the already obvious loss of life did not hinder UEFA from seeing fit for the match to not only start, but to reach its conclusion.

No good can come out of such a tragic and unnecessary loss of life. However, the horrific scenes at Heysel did signal the start of a relatively trouble free generation of football fans and the introduction of all seating stadia did at least make attending a mere football match not quite literally the matter of life and death that had seemed to become the norm’.
