An interesting fact is that Barnsley are the team we have beaten more than any other in competitive games. The flip side is we have lost to them more than any other !

Total record ; W46 D19 L46.

Bit of a “Dad’s Army” side with Barnett, Beasley, Barker & Foyle. No creativity in midfield, but with Talbot and an aging Barker it should come as no surprise. Not hard to see why we struggled that season.

I live in hope but I'm not getting any younger.

I always said seeing the Vale at Wembley and witnessing that Robbie Earle goal in the play offs were my greatest moments as a Vale fan but I was so proud when we got into the First Division and I could visit places like West Ham, Leicester, and the like, and see a Vale team running out at 10 to 3. Marvellous.

Whether we see that again is a tough ask but I remain hopeful.

You make a good point about the style of play we cultivated under Rudgie. It was always pleasing on the eye and good to watch. Wonderful memories.

It was the 'buzz' that Rudge created too, that pride in putting on the shirt to go out and put on a polished performance. you felt players were proud to play for the Vale, that it was an achievement in itself to do so

When you look back at games we played at this level, you realise that players who we probably didn’t rate ie Beasley, Beadle and even Koordes and Snijders etc were much much better than the standard of player we have been used to over the last decade or so. So far have we dropped. And this was a struggling side. Yet we played 9 out of 11 seasons at this level. Sometimes we forget what an achievement that was.

Hi all,

Hope you enjoyed that one. I am running a little short of new ones but I am hopeful that this Monday's will be a genuine classic. It's one that has never been on TV so I doubt many will have seen the full 90 mins.

I am in the process of converting to digital, editing, checking the sound etc but if it all goes well you'll find out which match it is over the weekend.

What I would say is - make sure you're not doing much on Monday evening as this one is well worth watching!

I found my recording of the 1999 FA Cup tie against Liverpool on VHS recently but it's not a great watch.
