Former Port Vale striker Ricky Miller speaks out about mental heath issues

Former Port Vale striker Ricky Miller has used social media to discuss the mental health issues which have affected his professional football career.

Miller spent a year at Vale Park after being signed by former manager Neil Aspin but he left by mutual consent in 2019 after six goals in 35 games.

Posting on Twitter Miller commented: “I went into pro football had a mental breakdown.”

Taking about his inability to discuss his issues Miller added: “I just used to clam up around the lads sometimes, then I’d go home get in bed and hide from the world.

Biggest thing that affected his career appears to have been booze. The lockdown should help him with the pubs being shut.

I'm not sure alcoholism is always in isolation. From reading his tweets a combination of low self esteem and efforts to hide it by being a "jack the lad" led to alcohol issues and/or exacerbated them.

Whatever his faults and its causes, I think it's certainly to his credit that he appears to be taking action and publicly facing up to his issues. It may be too late for his Vale career but if his speaking out and being open and frank helps him (and potentially encourages others to do the same) then I think that's a good thing myself.

I hope he sorts his life out.

It's probably a more complicated and sadder story than we know. Would love to know how much we paid Peterborough for him. It was a gamble which badly mifired. Hopefully he'll get the help he needs.

Not a shock is it.

Look at the likes of Gazza and our own genius Gary Roberts.

Miller came with baggage a plenty and our gamble didn't pay off. Myself I quite liked him despite too many times taking the wrong option.

Gave a couple of amazing moments, his debut free kick and the ground going mental in that brilliant win against Mansfield.

Fair play to him for facing his demons and reaching out. Wish the lad well.

To me that's the reason I've featured it. He's taken the step of opening up and seeking help and that's worthy of respect and understanding.

It's a good article Rob. He had a lot of detractors on here, understandably so.

But personally I feel he always gave it his best shot and would be horrible to play against.

Who knows what goes on inside his head , the fact his family were miles away and he never saw them wouldn't of helped someone with problems.

The last time I saw my son was Cheltenham away and we are close so I can empathise with him in some respects.

He certainly wasn't as bad a player as some posters made out.
