Worst Vale XI - nominate the manager

Let’s not put Aspin in there because we don’t know what it was like working under our previous chairman. I don’t condone violence but if Aspin had given him a slap ihe’d have been an even bigger hero of mine. Aspin didn’t have league experience and was brought in to appease the fans to take any attention away from you know who. Imagine if you were Aspin you’d have thought t was your birthday to be offered the PVFC managers job.

Like many others Gannon, the Stockport County RAT.

Yes, Butler has to be there along with his mate Bobby Smith. An honourable mention must also go to Sir Stan.

But the one who drove me to the edge of insanity was Brian Horton. His constant habit of playing players out of position (who remembers Sagi Burton at centre forward at Northampton & Liam Burns in the same position at Oldham) drove me ‘round the twist. Steve McPhee, who would later become the league’s top scorer, being shoved out to the right wing for a season. Allan Tankard, who played his whole career at left back (Rudge very occasionally played him in midfield) being deployed as a centre back. The list is endless.

Plus his insistence on re-writing history at some distant away mid week match when a poor performance became a good one several weeks later when he thought the few who were there would have forgotten. We didn’t.

I realise this will not be a popular view, but to me he was completely bonkers. Absolutely nuts.

I'm sorry - you are entitled to your opinion, of course...but we've had so many more worse managers than Horton...surely???

The football under Gordon Lee was, largely, boring and stultifying...as it was, to a slightly lesser extent under Rob Page. But, for me, Michael Brown was the worst manager I've known...marginally worse than the lunatic Jim Gannon! It wasn't just Brown's comments after games, but, subsequently, when he'd left the Vale he tried to airbrush over his failings - no respect from me, for that!

Brown is saved by bringing in Worrall. That was an incredible signing. In fact, he brought in a few relatively bigger names, certainly compared to the bargain bin non league Aspin era.

And also bought in Tom Pope, whose goals saved Vale subsequently, Montano and Tom Anderson. The former two and Worrall have gone onto to be key members of John Askey's team, 30% of the outfield players..

Ribeiro created the mess abetted by Smurhwaite, Michael Brown got the worst of the consequences and only just failed to keep Vale up.

Another pitch for Gannon. The bus incident played out live on Sky TV. Made himself and the club look the biggest fools of the day. Of course really poor management has to occur before the day of the event to get to that situation.

I thought Aspin tried his best and is far from worst. The deficiency I thought he had was with attacking coaching. The team consistently took the field with a repetitive and very predictable attack mainly base round high kicks down the pitch and other long ball / target man football. Then when they did manage to get in the final third it was with no rehearsed patterns of play so attacks broke down more than than should and the ball was given away when out of shape to defend the counter attack. I thought this must end soon, but it didn't. If we go up to top level the first thing that impresses about Liverpool and Man City is organisation. Their players can play at a much higher speed and aside from skill difference and better pitches it is also because they know their roles and where they are going to be an run to. Aspin needed a good attacking coach to compliment him and he may have been more successful if he had one. In the end he fell to rule of life that if an approach is not succeeding and you keep doing the same thing then you will carry on not succeeding and so the point was reached where change became inevitable. Behind the scenes I wonder if Aspin had distracting off field issues in his life - and I don't mean alcohol and drugs - just difficult life circumstances we all face at some point.

The discussion of Horton brings out an issue to consider. Horton was trying to keep a small club at a high level which it is always likely to be challenged to stay at.

Agreed. The 99/00 season was the start of when the Bosman ruling wheeling dealing of Rudge ending really hit home.

We didn’t have a championship team that year and relegation was inevitable at that point.

What Horton did well was to steady the ship once relegated and left us in a reasonable state when he left.

Horton built a good side really that 2000/2001 season we went on a long unbeaten run and ended up winning the ldv. If tony Naylor hadn't left in the summer and brammer been sold I would have fancied us to go up that season. In 2003/2004 he started the season where we almost made the play offs. I think if goodlad had been fit and we had better left back than brown or James ww would have gone up that season.

I know very little about Dennis Butler, but his choice of blazer alone in that photo makes me suspicious of him.

What was the wider context of his "yobs" comment?

Oh heck. That just isn't football at all. It's like seeing a doctor dressed as a clown in an operating theatre.

I think those stats pretty much reflect a lot of people’s opinions. Multiply them by certain factors like the Smurf effect, condition of the club at the time etc and you’ve a hybrid of Butler and Sinnott I reckon.
I hadn’t realised Smith was that bad as I think he took a higher league job at Swindon, but stats are stats
