Salary madness in the EFL

The Championship is definitely where it is at. There are clubs overspending trying to reach the Premier League riches, there are relegated clubs awash in parachute payments and with the majority of their over inflated PL squads. And they are doing all this without the TV millions that P clubs have access to. Then there are those Championship clubs without (often the promoted ones) who often fail to compete because no matter how good you are if the other club has seven times your budget you have no chance. It's a bonkers league and some clubs in it will end up destroying themselves.

Its broken. Well and truly shafted.

Club overspends - 120% of their revenue on wages alone, before you add in coaches, staff, scouting, commerical etc. This is funded via directors loans which could be called in at any point (or used to hold the club at ransom, cough cough Norm), outrageous examples of selling grounds to the owner, or simply kicking the can down the road to the next year and hoping a cup run plugs the gaps.

Let's say 6 teams engage in this practise; 2 reach the Prem, and 4 don't. Those 4 face sanctions, cut costs, probably plummet.

Those 2 though; get a slice of the Prem's billions. If they stay up; great, more billions! If they go down; not to worry, we have 3 years of financial cushioning to allow us to sort our sh**show of a business out. Use the money in those 3 years to fund an assault on re-entering the promised land. If we fail; ehhh, worry about that in 3 years. The Chairman will bail us (see Sunderland, probably Stoke)/sell us to the next rich fool in need of an ego trip.

This creates a disparity in the second tier; clubs who have tasted the big-time/are being funded to do so, and those who haven't (Barnsley, Burton, Rotherham, Luton).

These clubs have a decision; overspend like the rest and gamble the long-term on a short-term roll of the dice, or don't overspend, struggle, and get stick from the fans about a lack of ambition.

Some clubs opt for the former and the cycle continues ad infinitum.

The only outliers are genuinely clever clubs like Brentford, who utilise unorthodox recruitment activities (usually met with sneering from the traditionalists) to sign elite players for pittance and then flip for them 10x profit, all whilst competing in the top 6 and funding a new stadium. I want football to be more like this; clubs being inventive to gain success. Alternative tactics, shrewd recruitment, promotion of youth.

Jude Bellingham's moving up the world after sealing a £15.6m payday by joining Borussia Dortmund from Brum.Apparently he was on £145 a week at Brum but will now be on £60,000 a week after his £30m switch.

@ least he signed a contract so Birmingham will get a great fee. He could of not signed and walked for nothing. (well peanuts)

I would say what's more concerning about it all is, teams that make the Premier League and have been established for several years (Southampton for example) are losing money. What's the point in getting there and then getting in to financial difficulty?

I find the top two leagues a strange world, well away from what I consider to be proper football.

Leeds and West Brom will be paying out over £10million in bonuses to their promotion winning players based on the number of appearances.

Players who have played every game will be receiving £750,000 each.

No doubt similar bonuses, if not better, for avoiding relegation next season.
