Amazed to see Lipa mentioned in the same vein as some of the other dross.

For me it's thoroughly deserved. I used to watch him closely and in games he barely made a tackle and didn't cover any ground. I'm bemused others have a different opinion of him because for me, our other midfielders got totally overrun when he played cos he barely moved from the centre circle. Considering some of the other names didn't arrive with anything like the hype he did (the "Austrian Beckham") or on his wages, I think he's a definite candidate. And considering he then managed to racially abuse an opponent, his spell was nothing short of a disaster.

We really have got an embarrassment of riches for these two positions.

I wouldn't have Lipa on my short list. He'd be in the next group up (not very good either!) because he had the odd game/flash of inspiration where he did quite well and changed the game (with the emphasis on the word odd, very odd) but he was a huge disappointment. He came with a fanfare of trumpets and looked the part but blimey his career nosed dived. He reminds me a lot of several of Bruno's foreign legion - arrived on the crest of a wave but holed and sunk by the New Year. Wasn't he capped by Austria? Not that it's relevant.

You are right, Rob. It's strange how we all have different opinions and memories of players. But it makes for an interesting debate.

Given that Harsley is in charge of Man City’s elite squad, perhaps we should tap him up for a few of their wonder kids

Seems be to be highly rated in football; progressed from Scunnys U23s, to the Birmingham Academy, then Barnsley's U23 Coach, and now management probably the second most productive academy in England at City.

Wonder if he'll transition to senior coaching.

Think he stood in temporarily at Barnsley as their manager too Joe. He won’t leave his current role surely unless offered mega bucks. Just shows you that not the greatest players make the better managers etc.

You're maybe thinking about Andy Clarke?

I do remember us having Darrell and him playing about 90 seconds for us.  He was from Hartlepool, they thought quite highly of him.

I do remember Andy Clarke as well.  The no scoring striker from Wimbledon!  Not heard him mentioned in years!

This brings out a legitimate point. I wouldn't say a Ford Fiesta is a crap car and Bentley a good car using the same measurement. Clearly for the money the Fiesta probably is a good car and maybe the Bentley is too if money no object. So if our man Lipa was a really lazy dude and lived on his 23 minute international record to open doors but got paid lots of dosh then he could be worst ever if we are calling out some players who got paid buttons and played like that? Perhaps Exodus G escapes if he was super super super mega super cheap.

The relative wage rates of players is certainly a consideration when judging players. Burgess would probably be the signing of the summer on that criteria. The problem on using it as a criteria is that as fans we don't know what people are paid. We do know there will be a big differential between, say, Pope and Burgess.
