Quiz; name the players Lee Sinnott signed for Port Vale

I was a fan of both Bikey and Eagles. The problem was they struggled initially for match fitness but both were comfortably good enough for league one.

I'm not particularly defending Brown. His managerial record was poor, very poor. But it's worth remembering that had he not had to sell Alnwick and Grant, and had we not had perhaps the worst injury crisis in our history after January we would have stayed up. I'm convinced of it. Guy and Walker were very badly missed. Jerome Thomas and Knops too. He also, later, signed the likes of Montano & Worrall, plus loan players like Anderson and Harness. Most of his recruits were pretty rubbish, it has to be said, but there are a few gems in there. Anyone trying to manage the Club under Norman was bound to fail.

I've forgotten how bad Slater was. Simply out of his depth. He couldn't cope with the pace of the game and was promoted 2-3 leagues above his station, sadly.

We've seen a number of lads like that over the years. It's easy to forget how fast and how physical the professional game is and quite a number of players are unable to adjust to the speed and fitness required.

I don't think any were world beaters but I think it's a bit harsh to say "awful". After all, Griffith and Taylor were plucked from non-league obscurity and did OK enough. Admittedly there were a couple of hopeless signings but everyone (even the great JR) has a couple of ropey signings in them.

When you add in loanees he brought in such as Lee Collins, Mark Laird, Krystian Pearce I think Sinnott's signings were OK. Not great but not "awful" in my opinion. I certainly think they were better signings than Glover (Dave Brammer, Scott Brown, Neal MacKenzie,  Adnam Ahmed, Paul Marshall, Kevin Gall (!!!)... surely only Gareth Owen can be classed as a decent one)

For me the problem was his tactics and the balance of the team. As you highlighted his striking options were appalling and I think that was the reason he went down - but strikers are expensive. I think he tried to get a few on the cheap and none did the business for him.

I'm not trying to sugarcoat Sinnott's spell. It was pretty disastrous and he was rightly dismissed (whether Glover was the answer is a moot point) but I do think his signings were about the only good thing he brought - after all four of them - Griff, Taylor, McCombe and Dodds - made over 900 appearances combined for the club. If you count Collins (who Sinnott brought in on loan) that's five players who were regular squad players over the next few years that Sinnott was responsible for bringing in.

Thanks for reminding me of Kevin Gall Rob!

In fact, those names that Glover signed, my god! What an awful couple of years that was.

I'll accept Griff was a decent signing, in that he did a really good, effective job.  Would you take him over joyce though? Same role, although no comparison in football terms.  For me anyway, all about opinions of course.

I also think it is fair to say that every manager, probably glover apart actually, will sign some decent players amongst the dross.

One thing for sure, for me, is that Sinnott couldn't get a tune out of any of them.  We didnt look anything like a team.  It didn't even resemble football and I couldnt work out what we were trying to do at all.

Agree with Joe that the after Christmas show from the foreign legion team was dire.  But, as Sage alludes, we had one epic injury crisis as well.  We struggled to get a side out some weeks, it was painful.

But that sinnott/glover era was the worst for me.

I think Sinnott could spot a player a number of his signings turned out pretty decent under Adams.  McCombe, Dodds, Taylor(who scored some cracking goals), Griffith, Collins all did well for us to varying degrees.

Unfortunately it was how the team was deployed that let him down coupled with 2 or 3 bad signings, the rubbish Foyle bought in his last summer(Miller, Rocastle(candidate for the worst centre mid ever), Paul 'old one foot' Edwards, Tudor(who barely played) and the board wranglings he was always on to a loser.

Rob has summed it up pretty well all told.

Howland I always thought was one of the better players in a very poor side, again he scored a couple of crackers one away at Lincoln and another in the miracle comeback at Huddersfield in the cup.  When we started to improve under Adams he sort of got found out a a bit/Adams didn't rate him.  I think he ended up back in the Irish leagues.

These quizzes have got me thinking, wasn’t there a national quiz league for supporters clubs back in the 70s maybe.

seem to remember vale doing quite well.

It was Quiz Ball on TV wasn't it? I loved it....wasn't Phil Sherwin the team captain and they did really well? Or is my aged brain finally giving out.....don't answer!

Looks like Sinnot was a good scout but he wasn't an effective manager delivering up to expectations.

A lot went on between Sinnot and Glover/Jackson behind the scenes. Jackson had wanted Glover as manager and at one point was allowing him to veto signings. Glover fell out big time with Foyle. Then there was the joint manager period with Porter which got so bad Porter wouldn't speak to Glover. There was a night match with Porter and Glover on opposite sides of the dugout where neither spoke to the other once all night. They should have cleared the decks and let Sinnot bring his own coaching staff in. Bratt was trying to keep the peace with Jackson by convincing Sinnot to keep Glover.

I didn't know any of that. Sometimes I think new managers / clubs make huge mistakes at the outset with clear outs and David Moyes at Man Utd comes to mind. But in any walk of life people have to be pulling together in the right direction to be successful. Sinnot deserved a clean slate and a fair run at the job and it looks like he didn't get that at all.
