Annual Deficit is not the same as National debt increased by infrastructure spending if it ever happens,, and in any case it was only achieved by reducing health and services so that we are less prepared for Covid-19 than other countries such as Germany who have 4 times as much kit. Nor do Doctors and nurses grow on trees.

We actually increased health spending year on year though so i don't buy into this blanket "austerity" buzz word thing and I certainly don't buy into any argument that austerity has resulted in a lack of preparation for Coronavirus.

If we're being factually correct, then the increases in spending on the nhs have been reduced, but we have not reduced spending on it at all, it has actually increased.

Read the figures--from around 10% down to around 2% leaves substantial "wriggle room".  It's amazing after all the left-wing crowds' moaning about tight monetary controls, they're now complaining about increasing spending--absolutely unbelievable--or perhaps not, given their totally biased track record previously!!

Just a way to politicise a global tragedy.

Nobody's complaining about the spending, just the hypocrisy.

The NHS operated far better under the last Labour Governments, spending was up, and waiting times were far lower. I know as a major cheer leader of the current Government you don't want to hear that. But it is fact.

Can anyone explain this? I was led to believe that we had a FAR RIGHT government yet the most diverse cabinet of all time has basically ploughed a load of money into the NHS and come up with some employment policies which even Jeremy Corbyn has commended.

This can't have been what tory voters voted for? Maybe we should have a general election?
Yet they are borrowing like they accused Labour of doing.

A lot of it will be borrowed but in a sustainable way--what are you saying?  Let's return to austerity?

Investment could have been carried out in the same way 10 years ago, nothing to do with deficits and the excuse for austerity.

but with having austerity, to lower the debt of labours spending, and its a fact that the Office of Budget Responsibility, was set up combat some of these issues, the country is better placed to borrow now to honour pledges and fight this virus,

Nothing positive from austerity. Plus debt increased to over a Trillion not reduced.

if we had not have had those years, where would we be today?... also where would the country's finances be with the cost of extra support due to this virus?...

Piffle!  We were in the deep doo-do with massive borrowings and no money thanks to Labour's uncontrolled spending.  Don't try to re-write history.

Not hypocrosy--just differenet circumstances--nothing stand still--the world and events (as we're now experiencing) change all the time and a good government has to react according to the prevailing situations.

National debt is still rising, but under normal circumstances with an equally growing economy and increased GDP this wouldn't be a problem. However, given the current situation and the almost certainty of a global recession, that rising debt could yet be a real issue in the years to come!

Of course wait times improved. We couldn't afford the increases in spending however could we?

You should really be a major cheer leader of the current Government too. Far better than anything else available.
