Debate on playing games behind closed doors

I very much doubt partial confinement/isolation will stop the spread, it may slow it but it's unlikely to contain it.

If you are going to restrict events and public gatherings you have to restrict them all..... more people walk through supermarkets every week than attend football matches..... more people use public transport.... etc etc etc.....from the limited information I have it seems possible to contract the virus without any direct contact with a carrier.

If matches are going to be restricted then they should be restricted to all.... including players..... can't they contract it from another player, support staff, driver..... etc.... and take it home for their family to share?

At this point it seems a knee jerk reaction to something that can't be controlled.  If people want to run the risk it's their choice as it's their families choice to restrict contact afterwards.

Personally...... given my age and existing medical problems..... I wouldn't go.... but it should be my choice.

Yes but people need to shop for groceries. Thefirst step would be to stop public gatherings, rather than a mass quarantine. Going to Tesco's isn't a public gathering. If there was a lockdown as in Italy then there wouldn't even be behind closed door games, which is what is being discussed.

Behind closed door games would be fine for the Premier League, where match day revenue is secondary to the almighty TV deals. Not sure how much those deals would be affecting by the last <9 games being forced to be shown on TV for free, but I'm sure the Premier League clubs would be fine and they would just have to get on with it.

The effects for lower league clubs who actually rely on match day revenue would be much more severe. One would hope that in the spirit of community in a crisis and the common sense to keep clubs from collapsing then a small percentage of the Premier League riches would be temporarily redirected to the lower leagues to prevent financial ruin. Though with the attitude the "elite clubs" have had recently they may take a short sighted decision to let clubs go to the wall. If this were to happen then we should hold them accountable and not simply put it down as a unfortunate act of God.

Read a few quotes from Italian nurses and doctors who know a little more about it than yourself

The PL are discussing playing all the remaining games behind closed doors at three stadiums in the Midlands.Villa Park,Molineux and the King Power.

Three matches a day are being considered with all being shown live on TV to fulfil the league's contractual obligations to broadcasters.

Top-flight clubs face up to the £760m cost of not completing the campaign.

I'd be surprised if that was the case , are 20 players going to be happy and agree to be in a packed penalty area together in the foreseeable future?

If the other 19 people have tested negative for Covid-19 then they'll have to get over it at some point. The earliest projections for a vaccine is autumn 2021 so they could always go 18 months without leaving the house/kicking a ball if they'd prefer. Not sure if they'd be much use at it by then.

Looks like return by behind closed doors could happen. OK at Premier League level and maybe Championship level with TV coverage. But at League 1 and 2 level there are two problems. Firstly how many clubs are going to survive that long and who will be left to play? Secondly playing behind closed doors causes match day costs and increases financial deficit with no gate revenue?

ok heres a thought, finish season right away, pools panel predict remaing games, football league pay lower leagues there average gate and sundries  start next season as normal . or is that too simple? failing that cancel the season and start afresh next season cost of unplayed games to supporters knocked off season ticket..

The Premier League can easily cover the losses, or at least give sturdy support to stop clubs going bust in the next few months.

Just a couple of matters: firstly the Premier League clubs being able to fulfill broadcasting contracts to keep their own business models going, and secondly you have scumbags like the Spurs and Newcastle chairman who have zero interest in integrity or supporting the lower leagues.

The Premier League needs to be both willing and able.
