Debate on playing games behind closed doors

Interesting article on it here - https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/mar/09/efl-clubs-fear-for-future-if-coronavirus-forces-behind-closed-doors-games

It seems there are all sorts of things that could be done - a temporary ban on the 3pm broadcasting blackout (for instance) and making games "free to air" (I presume for the likes of Vale that would mean simply allowing free access to the iFollow service on Saturday afternoons)

However, it also makes the point that the stadium bans may be counter-productive. If the game is on free to air then fans gathering in pubs to watch are more likely to spread it among themselves in a closed environment then they would be sat in an open air stadium.

Then there's the loss of revenue if the games were simply broadcast for free and the club were missing out on walk-up ticket sales, food sales, sales from the club shop etc.

Tough one. We should be guided by the experts on it. On a more general point, I feel we are now at the point where the lack of trust in the media and politicians (on all sides) will come back to bite us/them.

On a more lighthearted point, why couldn't this have turned up when we were <ovf censored>?

What are the options? Complete the season behind closed doors, or abandon the season and everyone starts in the same league in September or whenever it is safe to do so ?  Funding of football clubs, allow live broadcasts of all games but TV income to be spread over lower league clubs to cover their running costs.

I guess as it's so unprecedented we really are in uncharted waters.

I think if there was confidence that a few weeks of isolation measures would have an effect then a temporary suspension for a fortnight and a delayed end to the season would be best but Vale and loads of clubs have players out of contract in May - how would that work for instance?

More people will die through the economic downturn associated with all this daft scaremongering than the virus itself. This is not a bad disease in the whole scheme of things. Business as usual (except for government intervention to shut down the tabloids and to bring in rationing to prevent the selfish hoarders from ruining everything for the rest of us).

Players contracts run out on 30 June I believe.

220 people die from smoking related illnesses every single day in this country. EVERY SINGLE DAY. Ban the sale of tobacco if you're that worried about people passing away. To be fair the people who are dying from this disease would have died of something else pretty soon anyway. 500,000 people die in this country every single year. Nobody lives forever, and if you're over 80 years old you're a sitting duck for mortality one way or another.

People need to get a grip.

Getting back to topic, unless there are thousands of people dying every single day, football fixtures with supporters should continue. We are not a nanny state. Let the people make their own minds up whether they are willing to risk leaving the house to support the Vale.

I very much doubt partial confinement/isolation will stop the spread, it may slow it but it's unlikely to contain it.

If you are going to restrict events and public gatherings you have to restrict them all..... more people walk through supermarkets every week than attend football matches..... more people use public transport.... etc etc etc.....from the limited information I have it seems possible to contract the virus without any direct contact with a carrier.

If matches are going to be restricted then they should be restricted to all.... including players..... can't they contract it from another player, support staff, driver..... etc.... and take it home for their family to share?

At this point it seems a knee jerk reaction to something that can't be controlled.  If people want to run the risk it's their choice as it's their families choice to restrict contact afterwards.

Personally...... given my age and existing medical problems..... I wouldn't go.... but it should be my choice.

Smoking is a choice, but not so easy to stop. Sitting ducks prefer to sit for a season or more at the Vale as long as they are otherwise fit enough to do so, life is still precious. We don't need to be told what to do.

I suppose a footballer is no different than lots of other people going to work, at least they have a shower afterwards, otherwise same precautions and ban spitting.

Do they need to? Who will pay their wages otherwise?

I know this has got nowt do with playing behind closed doors but does anybody know when Oldham tickets are on sale

Nothing on the site as far as I can see, but Oldham stubs will give priority to ST holders for Plymouth tickets. See club announcement.

As you say off-topic for this thread
