Our budget

Our budget is definitely lower this season than last because Kevin Shanahan said so in an early season Q and A on the official site. My guess is there are half a dozen very low and very high ones and we are in a tightly bunched middle with marginal difference from 7 to 18.

I reckon this won't be far away the truth. I think we're maybe £200-300k down on last year when we had the 10th highest.

I believe its not quite that much, which makes me think that there are a bunch of clubs in the middle with broadly the same budgets. I'd guess Bradford, Plymouth, Salford, Swindon, Forest Green, Northampton, Exeter, Mansfield, Scunthorpe (allegedly in financial trouble due to wages post relegation), Walsall (legacy of relegation) and possibly Grimsby post the transfer window are paying significantly more than us.

Re Scunthorpe - I read somewhere that the reason Hurst was sacked was because the chairman told him to cut the wage bill on relegation and he actually increased it!!

Kevin and Carol had to pay over the odds to get Smurthwaite to leave. They've likely got quite an overdraft to maintain, must be a real headache for them. So no moans about the Man City cash, or low budgets. We don't want to spend spend spend and go the way of Bury FC.

He did. I suspect Hurst recruited first then tried to off-load players he didn't want after. Problem nobody wanted the players he didn't want on the wages they paid. Once you are stuck with a player not performing its hard to get shot.

Yeah I bet you are right... just goes to show how hard it is if you recruit incorrectly based on paying more for better players... Look at Notts County too.

Just goes to show what an awesome job Askey is doing!

Don’t forget the blue helmet ran down the ground so much the Safety Committee kept reducing the capacity. All this issues he avoided had to be corrected. Imagine getting  Stoke at home in the cup and only be able to let in 7k.

A lot of our budget was spent on rectifying knob heads indifference.

The top and bottom of it is that we’ve done really well this season. For me it’ll be one of those seasons that I don’t want to end. I have no interest in international football so it’ll be a long summer with the slow down of information coming from the club because nothing is happening. We’ll certainly be a more attractive club for players to come to next season.
I know the club has volunteers but i’m sure that if the club advertised for volunteers as projects came up, more ppl would turn up if they had a couple of days free. So with volunteers and streamlining of playing staff, with quality over quantity, I’m sure next season will be even better than this one. We should have a little more of a disposable income next season and I predict that season ticket sales will rise marginally and we’ll move closer to 5,000, which surely must be a target for the club.

We did but its home crowds that pay the bills and we have a large stadium to fund. Crewe probably have a bigger surplus per game than us given the relative match day costs and only a 300 lower average attendance. Taking 2500 away is a 50k cash boost for the opposition. That said our core support puts us in the top half of this league but outside the top 3. Discount Crewe and 4 to 11 on the list have broadly similar fan bases. The disappointment is despite a better season and the new owners attendances are only up 400 on last season.

As Guitar Ray says, we have some attractive matches to come.  I think we could end up averaging 5300 - 5400, depending partly on whether the last match is vital. That would then be plus 850 - 950, roughly a 20% increase. A different scenario.  After the absolute crap suffered by us under v2001/Mold, and then that creature, many many fans have been lost and it takes a lot to get them back. Just think of fanatical supporters like Fairportnick and his family, have they regularly returned? Sorry Nick, just using you as a typical example, nothing intended.   Attracting new fans in the future may be slightly easier now Stoke are no longer in the Prem though.

We took more away yesterday than some clubs get home gates.

No body denies that it's obvious that our away support is magnificent.

The discussion is about our 17th position budget wise.

This seasons first budget under C&K would have been based under last seasons figures.

TJH Valiant said he felt that the figure of 17th wasn't correct I'm saying it probably was under Smurthwaites administration, C&K are starting from scratch and next seasons budget will more than likely reflect that.

That said our gates are only slightly up on last season, which is disappointing, so I for one was glad we didn't go mad with the Cup windfall it ain't cheap running a football club.

Don’t get me wrong, if it is the 17th biggest budget out of 24 that isn’t a bad thing if you look at the quality of our squad and the prospect of more income being pumped in, the future looks bright.

I just find it hard to believe that Smurfwaite ever paid out more. The same sort of thing from last year suggest something like the 7th biggest spend?

Does anyone have the comparable figures from previous years? I thought most clubs had made cut backs this season?
