Our budget

Recommended Posts

There is an interesting article in today's Football League paper about John Askey.  In the course of his interview he mentions that our wage budget is the 17th highest in the division.  This does rather suggest that we are punching well above our weight.

It certainly shouldn’t be the 17th biggest given our gates and commercial operations. I doubt it is. Even so, it is being well managed and spent. Fans more likely to spend money for Carol and Kevin than foul mouthed pier end comedian, Smurfwaite.

The owners have had to spend a lot of cash at the beginning of the season on work on the ground.  Our previous owner had left us non-compliant with various regulations and that had to be addressed.  I assume these were one off spends so may not be necessary again next year.

This is the very reason we are so lucky to have Askey, the man is a magician with low budgets but I have no doubt it will be bigger for next season without being silly money

Lets not forget that scumbag demanded well over the odds for the club and as jean said the owners have paid out a lot to do the ground up.....

How would Askey  know that we had the 17th highest budget ?,

The EFL send out details to clubs of where their budget sits in the League. You don’t know who the other clubs are as I understand it but your position is highlighted. Salford will be top!

Carol has often called this season a "pilot" season as she said they didn't know how much revenue the club could potentially generate. I assume she means because Smurthwaite was thieving cash and moving it around the accounts.

I'd say to be prudent, the budget was low-balled this year to avoid putting us in trouble.

After this season I'm sure Carol and Kevin will know exactly what the revenue potential is here and hopefully it's enough to add another 2 or 3 quality players!

This stuff about the budget is interesting.  It shows that money doesn't necessarily buy success but common sense and good coaching might.

As Stoke are proving in reverse

Our gates last season and commercial operations last season didn't pull any trees up.........That would explain 17th position.

We took more away yesterday than some clubs get home gates.

We don't make any money from away league followings unfortunately.

Fair enough. As a proportion of our home following I reckon we are up there with the best in our away following.

We did but its home crowds that pay the bills and we have a large stadium to fund. Crewe probably have a bigger surplus per game than us given the relative match day costs and only a 300 lower average attendance. Taking 2500 away is a 50k cash boost for the opposition. That said our core support puts us in the top half of this league but outside the top 3. Discount Crewe and 4 to 11 on the list have broadly similar fan bases. The disappointment is despite a better season and the new owners attendances are only up 400 on last season.

Agree, yesterday was almost 50% of our home gate.
