Match Thread: Walsall v Port Vale

Even game, could’ve gone either way. The lads were flat out, lacked energy in the second half. Pope maybe should’ve come on much early, he occupied there centres half much better, before Pope entered the fray, they started most from the back 2.

I think if we’d have gone out and out 442 earlier on in the 2nd half I think we’d have done better.

When Manny came on, I don’t think he touched the ball for nearly 10 mins and you could see he was a country mile off the pace, both in his play and slowness decision making - more to come from him but good to see him get some game time.

Next time out I’d bring Taylor back into the team, drop Browne (who looked short of fitness today!)

I wonder how early the team got to the ground, because I thought a lot of the team looked really leggy.

2 defeats in 15 games in the league, that is class form and a massive improvement, 4 points out of the next 2 would be amazing.

Browne looked like he was in low confidence mode today. Rarely tried to beat his man. But big Leon was also shaky. One of those days. Cullen was totally out of it as we went hoof ball.  But again we got a point, at the end of the day. Not a great effort, but play badly get a point.  That will do for me.

Reset required for Scunny.

I genuinely think the conditions played a part in it, because both teams were poor when shooting towards the away end. I thought that whilst we started better, we looked a bit nervous early doors, like there was a lot of expectancy from a big following and not much margin for error if we want to reach the playoffs.

You having a laugh???? Same team next week for me.
Definately should be changed after that. Brisley poss injured anyway so put Smith back in centre and bring Gibbons back in. Browne not interested today - in comes Amoo. Poss Manny or Taylor for Conlon.

Very happy with a point as we did not play well. Rarely got the ball down and played like we can. Thought only player that did try to play good football was Burgess - more impressive with every match.
Shame as both of their goals easily avoidable. Bad mistakes by Brown and Montano but it happens.
10 points from last 4 games will do for me.

I thought Conlon wasnt that bad  today, but understand that tactics may mean one of the midfielders is sacrificed when we start getting over run. I certainly wouldn’t be considering manny to start, he looks way off it yet.

Two assists should guarantee he plays next week.

A few of things struck me immediately yesterday. First of all when we are going to be put under pressure as Walsall applied we need 'real' full backs on duty. Monty is too prone to making errors though he does also produce some good work. What the hell was he doing allowing  a ball which he could and should have cleared run to an opponent for a easy second goal. Secondly if we reach the 'promised land' of L1 next season we will need more pace from our central defenders. I love Leon but he gets run ragged when playing against pacey forwards and in L1 there will be plenty awaiting us there.

Thirdly as everyone and his dog knows I am a massive Tom Pope fan but Tom should always be leading us when we are away from home, why? Simply because his hold up play is far superior to any other player on our books. When he gets on the ball he has the ability to make it 'stick' allowing both breathing space for our defence and the opportunity to feed his supporting midfielders with decent service.

My son and I knew that Tom's introduction would bring an end to Walsall's dominance in a game that they had bossed for most of the time. I hope that the manager has taken note of this also. There is a case for Cullen to start in some home games when the opposition has big but slow defenders and when our midfield is on top of their game as they were against Colchester in the second period.

Finally a big shout out for Dave Worrall what a performance once again whilst others wilted he stood out like a beacon looking every inch the player that we hoped for when we signed him from Millwall. I'm chuffed to bits that he has extended his stay at Vale Park.

For one enjoyed the atmosphere especially once TomPope entered the fray as the anger towards the homer ref was beginning to boil .

Second half up to when there best player hobbled off we were second best ,slow ,cumbersome but I felt once he left the fray we finished the game much the better with every player stepping it up .

Two goals conceded terrible but to still get a draw when clearly second best is good enough v bogey side Walsall .

Burgess was very good Worrall did well .

A enjoyable game

Their enforced sub was a turning point as you rightly point out.

I trust the management team 100% but I’d have preferred Taylor to come on rather than Manny.  I appreciate that we needed a bit of beef in midfield, and Manny clearly needs game time, but Taylor gives us more of a goal threat, and I felt this would’ve been a better option especially with the introduction of Pope.

Conlon had played well first half but we were overrun in the second so changes were inevitable.  The other subs for Browne and Cullen were quite obvious, neither player having much joy. Amoo and Pope both made a difference.

I came out of the ground thinking it was a point gained rather than 2 dropped.

It’ll be interesting to see the team selection for Scunny, does John stick or twist.

Yesterday was case in point at how easy it is for us emotionally-driven fans to get swept up in a run of good form.

Its important to remember that we're still a work in progress with a number of deficiencies, and will have bad performances.

We weren't at the races yesterday but Walsall are clearly a hot and cold side; one week abysmal, the next scintillating, hence their mid-table mediocrity. They've got lively attackers in Adebayo and Holding but are ropey at the back. We caught them on an good day for them, with their more articulate fans claiming its the best 90 they've played all season.

It seems clear that Cullen simply doesn't work away from home, and Pope struggles at home - is it to be solved with a simple Cullen at home, Pope away rule? Probably.

To gain a point against a decent side who played well is a good result in our book; we still need 6ish wins to be sure of top 7. If we can win 4 of our 6 remaining home games, which I'd back us to do due to our excellent record at home, then draws like yesterday could prove crucial.

Good news is, we're back at VP against a Scunny with obstensibly nothing to play for. We can freshen things up; Monty and Smith seemed to struggle so maybe its time to get with specialist fullbacks in Clarke and Gibbons. Taylor and Oyeleke may give us more on-the-ball dynamism than the dependable duo of Conlon and Burgess. Amoo's blistering pace may stretch defences more than the more industrious Browne.

Its a 4 horse race for the the 3 last play off places, and we're bang in it. If our home form continues, we'll need probably 2 away wins to seal the deal. Genuinely exciting stuff, considering at this point I anticipated we'd be drawing up mock retained lists and deciding who we'd want to sign.

We had the highest away following in League 1 or 2 yesterday. Well done folks.

Anyone who doesn't think Mitch Clark should come straight back into the XI is nuts.

He's a class above. Monty made his first error since boxing day yesterday but Clark is another level of full back. He's a must.

Also would get Taylor and Amoo back in.

Great Away day yesterday. Good to see so many families there with children too.

Our Away fans are also a lot more considerate than they used to be: we all jump up at moments of excitement, but need to remember that whenever we stand up, small people behind cannot see the game.

One minor moan: a few people seem to want to blame the referee for not giving us every decision.  there were a couple of marginal calls towards the end of the game(keeper’s ‘handball’ and thePope wrestling match), but not really helpful to chant ‘cheat’ at the referee.

Glad I’ve got that off my chest.
