Match Thread: Walsall v Port Vale

Predicted a point beforehand and taking one in games like this could be invaluable. Never managed to play much fluid football and at times second half looked on the ropes. However, cannot question the commitment and endeavour. Never stopped running and in the end those last 10 minutes we showed our fitness to almost nick it.

Sorry about the negative but to the families who had to leave with their young kids first half to the right and behind the goal, I feel disappointed to call those idiots whoever they are a few rows back from me Vale fans. A bloke asks a groups of 18/19 year olds to sit down so he can see and they point blank refused and hurled abuse at him. Went on for 10-15 minutes until almost got physical before stewards intervened. This resulted in families with dads and mums leaving that area as they had young kids. Despicable showing really. Grow up lads and support the team and show some respect for other people.

Exactly. Cullen is useful but I think he'll be one of them that does well at home but not enough in away games generally. I'd love to have their big lad up top today, Adebayo. Big, strong and mobile. To look at him you would think Bennett could be that sort of player for us, but he's simply not good enough to warrant a place in any side chasing promotion.

They had 3 I’d love us to look at, their No’s 10, 11 and 25.

@ollyandpatch re Smith vs Gibbo... I don’t think it’s quite as simple as saying Gibbo should have started. The conditions were awful at times so it was inevitable the ball would be in the air a lot and I’d point to the fact that our first was off a superb set-piece route helped by having Smith, Legge and Brisley all in their box. So while we never looked troubled from multiple inswinging free kicks which we might otherwise have been, we always vulnerable to the ball in behind 2nd half. So I’d say it was a case of a 6 and two 3’s. They were no mugs and played some good give and go’s at times.

Strange game today. I thought a draw was about right. Both keepers made decent saves but Brown will be disappointed with their first. Monty could have done more for their second. We never hit the heights of last week but after our subs I thought we looked the more likely winners. We go again next week. Cheltenham are playing both Northampton and Colchester before facing us so things should be a little clearer in a fortnight.

Firstly I would have taken a point before the kick off. I think both teams started slow and then we took the lead, which I think was fair at that time. We soon gavE away an aequaliser and then seemed to lose our way especially in midfield. I was pleased that we then regained the lead and expected to kick on in the second half, how wrong was my prediction. They gave us a bit of a lesson in football and we didn’t give their keeper anything to do until Worrall had a shot which was after 80 something minutes. The ball did seem to bounce for Walsall but taking nothing away from them they are a good team and we’re very slick. I can understand bringing on Manny to bolster the midfield but he looked slow and overweight, perhaps not the sort of game to throw him into. Cullen didn’t seem to get much of the ball and we changed once TP came on, very much like the Crewe away game. We offered nothing in the second half until TP entered the frame.

I try to give an unbiased report but the referee was shocking. I’d defend him if I could but sorry I can’t. Towards the end of the game a number of players went up for a corner and Brisley got crunched resulting in him lying on the floor holding his leg. I could see the Vale medical team at the side of the pitch wanting to get on to treat Brisley and he held his hand up as though to indicate that they weren’t allowed into the pitch.

Normally I would be happy with an away point but felt disappointed today.for their second goal, there was a Vale player, couldn’t quite see who it was, had loads of time to clear the ball but fannied about and ended up loosing it.we should had a penalty for the assault on Pope, and their keeper should have been sent off for handling the ball outside his area.

Another crap ref has cost us 2 points today.

Cullen shouldn't be starting away from home in an ideal world, not when he's up there alone. You need someone big and strong to help relieve inevitable pressure at times, and he's neither of those things. It's no coincidence that we started to match them again once Pope entered the picture. Whatever happends or doesn't happen we are crying out for a forward to take us on that next step.

I thought Pope should of come on far earlier as nothing was sticking up front for the first 30 minutes of the second half. That said, I thought they were fortunate not to concede a penalty for the clear fouls on Worrell and Pope.

a lucky draw id say! our midfield needs to win and hold onto the ball more, five times in a row joyce tackled, had the ball aqnd gave it away putting the defence under pressure.played well in parts, but they must have had possession 70pc of the game.definite penalty on pope, poor referee (again). conlon off form and some players lethargic. nice to see kevin and caro lmixing in the crowd, will be changes next sat no doubt .pope in for Cullen, smith for brisley, gibbo at r back amoo for brown, oyleke for conlon. (perhaps)

Funny to read the comments about the ref, he didn’t cost us points. It wasn’t him defending the back post for the second and neither was it him spilling the ball for the first.

It’s easy to be critical when we follow up a good home performance with a poor away one. But it’s always a different game when you play away and in the main as long as you don’t lose it’s not a bad thing to grab a point away from home. In particular when you don’t play that well and when it’s against a half decent side too.

I mentioned  it earlier in the week about team selection and I think it’s a fine line between being loyal and tempted to stick with the side that played so well, or realising you got away with a reshuffle last week and should go back to bringing back in your best players in their right positions. Smith had nowhere near the same game and it’s painfully obvious in his forward runs that he’s not a full back, clearly not his fault because he’s a centre half by trade. Browne was ineffectual this week, and in that second half he really dropped off and looked off it a bit. I’m fact I’d say we offered little in the way of an attacking threat from both full back areas and our left wing especially. Maybe that’s also down to the opposition and how well they played also.

Our defensive shape in that second half was terrible. We got pulled all over the place and it took what felt like an age for us to react with changes. On paper manny would be the right player to bring on to add some strength in the midfield, but he clearly looked like someone who hadn’t played in a long time and I felt we were carrying him. Hopefully it doesn’t take him long to get back up to speed. Conlon was unlucky to be subbed I thought. Quite a contrast from the first half where joyce was controlling the pace of the game and the energy of Conlon and Burgess was causing them problems. I wouldn’t change the midfield next week at all tbh.

The goals are poor ones to concede, obviously Browns made an error for the first and then kept us in it with a great save later. I have no idea what monty was trying to do on the second goal. I still stick by what I’ve said before that when available we should be playing Gibbo and Clark as full backs. No more messing about with trying to convert  wingers or centre halfs to be a full back.

The positives are that first half we played some decent stuff and the mistake aside would have been comfortable at 2-0. Even when under the cosh second half we stuck at it and Amoo and Pope made a difference to us and maybe we could have (undeservedly) nicked it with worralls chance. But a point away from home isn’t a bad thing and the unbeaten run goes on.
