The million pound man...

Aussie Rules

Recommended Posts

Just tidying up my football scrapbook and on this day in 1979 Nottingham Forrest's manager Brian Clough paid £1.1 for Trevor Francis -- the first player in England to break the £1 million transfer fee barrier.

On the news clipping my faded scribble reads 'Madness, sheer madness'.

41 years later 'such madness' continues...

Wasn't Brando's fee for The Godfather?

Yes Geo, I know it's peanuts when reading some PL players command half a million £s plus for a single game.

Yup, the madness continues 😎

I'm not sure Barry..... I think it was for mutiny on the bounty.... early 60s?

Quickly followed by Liz Taylor..... Cleopatra?

I don't think it was the first time an actor made a million from a film.... with all the possible add ons..... just first time it was a contracted salary.... that's one of the reasons I'm not sure about the film...... and fading memory 😊

Dur...I've got the biddy dvd - Mutiny on the Bounty.

Going back to football wages Geo- and I might need the purists to clarify for me - but I seem to remember wages in the early 50s pegged at £12 per game regardless of 'Division :unsre:

A time when the game was more important than the people who played it?

I can't remember mate, I have a whisp of memory about it.... but I couldn't say I remember it mate

Enter stage left Jimmy Hill !

As late as 1961 wages were capped at £20 a week and that was only during the 9 month playing season ! Pay was even reduced during the summer months !

Hill and the PFA got the abolishment of the maximum wage rule, which resulted in fellow Fulham & England defender Johnny Haynes becoming British football’s first £100 a week player !
