Pope tweets under investigation by FA

I think it's very telling that even in games where Pope is playing, Legge now has the captains armband. One is a charity ambassador and writes a blog highlighting epilepsy and the struggles he's gone through. The other is up till all hours abusing 14 year old Crewe fans on twitter.

Tom, you are and always will be a vale legend for your actions on the pitch. But in a season of such positives off the pitch, you've been the one big let down.

Popes been spending too much time on Faceache. It’s riddled with far right white supremacist propaganda.

One of his tweets in December quickly got deleted but it was the same sort of cack but more overt. Another one having a go at single parents got taken down the next after a few “ oh you think that your above us now” replies

Again it was from the same political spectrum.

He’s like a poor mans badly briefed Eric Cantona

If the FA agreed that Hennessey had never heard of Hit ler, then surely Pope not knowing the Rothschilds are Jewish is an even more believeable case. High school history teaches you about WW2. Nothing teaches you the religion of some semi-famous banking guy (in banking circles)

And even if Pope did, its hardly antisemitic. He repeated some nonsense that one person/family would take over banking...not the entire Jewish religion. In the same way that saying Bruno Ribeiro was one of our worst managers ever isnt a slight on the nation of Portugal and the ability of Portuguese to manage football teams.

He can’t use I didn’t realise. Explain how you tweet about something you didn’t realise you were tweeting,

Take a look at the "Carol speaks out" thread.

It's quite simple really...... you may associate the name Rothschild with banking without knowing their religion.... the name used to be bandied about to denote wealth.

Some good points there, that’s a decent defence imo.

I'm not going to go into the rights and wrongs of this, it has all be well documented on here .

What i will say is that the 2 games he has been banned so far we have lost them both. Though prior to Scunthorpe he had lost his place for 6 games and was a sub. Great option to throw on though to rescue a point. Swindon we'd arguably of lost with him in anyway.

This prattish and childish behaviour can't go on unpunished by Vale, if he does get another ban irrelevant of whether he knew of any Jewish links or not the club should also give him an additional ban.

He's clearly not intelligent enough to know of the link, his crass comments regarding other stuff belong in the gutter as it is.

Myself i'm not bothered about strange FA terminology with regards to any offences, what i'm bothered about is the reputation of our club and the League table.

You could argue his actions are detrimental to both.

From what I can understand...

Ban one - for insulting comments about Mansfield CEO Carolyn Radford

Ban two - for insulting comments to a Crewe fan (apparently likening him to Goonies character Sloth)

These charges relate to the Rothchilds [sic] tweet after the Man City game

He should have learned by now - can someone delete his  twitter account 😀

Oh well gives our other strikers a chance to prove their worth.

Will be missed tho.  Just hope it is one game like the others.

It's a true point but I think the FA might throw the book at him. It would be a bad look to be seen to go soft on anti-Semitism considering the criticism the Labour party have been getting on the issue for the last few years. Not that Labour and the FA are related, just that an organisation failing to condemn anti-Semitism has been in the news recently so it would be more widely reported than it otherwise would be. And as Pope is a lower league footballer the FA will happily hammer him, an easy target.

I don't know the process though, maybe those that judge his innocence or guilt have no vested interest in making the FA look good/bad and are only interested in fairness. Can't see it though. I'd say they'll throw the book at him, though I'd be surprised if it was a suspension of more than 3-5 games.

I can see the point but I don't think it's quite as simple as that unfortunately.

It's not a common stereotype to say all Portuguese managers are rubbish but it is a commonly held stereotype for some to say Jewish people control the world's banks. In that way,  the FA could see Pope's tweet  as perpetuating an offensive racist stereotype.

I also think if it was a one-off like Hennesey then he'd have a chance but this is Pope's third charge of the season.

Hennesey's charge  was due to a photo of him supposedly doing a Nazi salute. You could argue it's  unfortunate timing (I personally think it's a stretch but you could argue that) but Hennesey wasn't purposely typing something like Pope did.

Therefore I just don't think the "Hennesey" defence of "innocent mistake" will work for him.

In my view the best thing he can do is take the punishment, learn from it, delete his Twitter account, concentrate on the football and let his goals and performances do the talking for him from now on. And if he wants banter - have it with his teammates in the privacy of the dressing room.

I would argue that he named a very big banker who happens to be Jewish not a Jew who happens to be a banker..... he didn't mention religion.

If we are going to condemn for what he might mean or what someone percieves the meaning to be we are on a very slippery road.

I have an uncle named Tom..... I can call him uncle Tom..... what if he was black?..... and someone perceives that to be racist?..... am I guilty?

Same. Thought the comment was about them owning loads of banks, which they do don't they?

There have been conspiracy theories for years that the Rothschilds (a wealthy Jewish banking family) have so much hidden control that they have caused wars to profit from them. The implication is that all they think about is money and will do anything to get profits. It plays into the insulting stereotype of the heartless Jew only interested only in themselves and money. The sort of stuff Mr Hitler used to rant about in the 30's

So, Tom saying that the result of WW3 would be the Rothschilds owning all the banks (the implication being they will do well out of a WW3 situation) plays directly into that antisemitism/conspiracy theory.

EDIT: Wikipedia probably explains better than the above here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rothschild_family#Conspiracy_theories
