Match Thread: Port Vale v Macclesfield Town

First half I said to the lads around me that Macclesfield looked like a team going through the motions with all the crap they’re dealing with. I really thought there would only be one winner. I thought first half we were having a load of joy down their left with Amoo and Gibbo linking well and we were getting the ball into the box a lot. Monty and Worrall played more like individuals yet Monty still found himself in some really good positions engineered by his own pace and skill. Burgess like Taylor gets himself into some good positions to get a shot off and I felt that joyce was controlling the game from the middle. I didn’t think they offered much threat at all, even though they kept the call well at times.

But those 2 goals we conceded were a real sucker punch. Arguably the first should have been closed down sooner and I think Smith was a little too far off their forward to allow him the space to turn and shoot for the second. But we fought back well, pressed and put pressure on them until we got the goal (similar to their second I thought) from Amoo. Even then I didn’t think we’d lose the game but we let ourselves down a bit in the final third with our movement and some stray passes. Maybe understandable given the weeks exertion? I don’t know. But we kept going til the last minute which was pleasing to see, but that tiny bit of quality was lacking when we needed it.

The Bennett/Pope debate is a good one, but I watch bennet play and I genuinely believe he makes a token effort to make it look like he’s doing stuff when a lot of his hold up play and heading is half hearted to me. I’m getting more and more convinced of that the more I see him play.

For me I was disappointed with a draw but I still felt we looked better than them, we just let ourselves down in that 5 minute spell when they got back into it. Credit to everyone for keeping going and getting a result though. Standout for me were Legge, Gibbo, Joyce and Burgess.

You have to give credit to Macc on probably half the wages of our team, yet matched us in all departments. They deserved a point ! We are still a few players short ! We are work in progress and  today highlighted that. We are a nearly team great one day poor the next just need a bit of consistency to get promotion. Would have taken this position at the start of the season .

After a good start , we lost  our way, but overall it was a good performance from Vale, and the players  showed great character to come back for the equalizer . Burgess was excellent again. Brilliant goal by Worrall. It’s frustrating to have dropped points against Cheltenham, Mansfield and Macc, but honestly, we’re 10th and in good shape, with a big cup tie to come on Saturday, and a lot of football to be played in the league. That’s a good return so far from Askey and the lads. Glass half full for me. Happy New Year to all Vale fans . Keep the faith. UTV

My biggest annoyance of today was some so called vale ‘supporters’ behind me. All they did was moan about the team and abuse our own players and the more I think about it they only seemed to criticise Amoo, Browne (when he came on) and Montano (most abuse was aimed at him. Anybody see the link?

Anyway, thought a draw was a fair result obviously disappointed not to take all 3 but thought Macc were very good in phases.

Monty my man of the match. He does lose the ball sometimes but at least he has a go and runs at defenders and very often glides past 2 or 3.

In Askey I trust

Whilst I acknowledge Macc weren't bad let's not make them out to be something they aren't. They would be 18th without the points deducted.

They are an average to poor side who have taken 4 points off us.

Let's have some balance, they are not dross nor are they a good side as some have suggested.

Absolute nonsense. They've only lost one more game than we have all season. Turn a few of their many draws into wins and they'd be where we are. If we're actually better than them it's by a whisker regardless of current league positions. Today was a decent game of football between two decent, evenly matched teams.

Hence the reason draws get you nowhere.

We are the joint most draws in the division along with Macc.

The fact is that they haven't turned draws into wins because they aren't good enough. Be interested to see how many of their draws have been from a winning position because yet again we drop points whilst leading.

I'm in hysterics that because they played ok today that suddenly Macc are a decent side. Quite clearly they aren't .

People seem happy to moan at any player, usually for a bad pass when they are trying at least to force something. I’m sure the players want everything to go right on the pitch too, but the reality is that it never will. They will all make some mistake in every game. But give their all for the short and that’s all I’d ask for.

I think most would agree that they are decent, and many would agree they are better than there current league positions suggests they might be. On the evidence of the two games against us I'd have a handful of there players.

It does seem to me that a small minority of Vale fans pick on black players as they have a preconception that they are lazy.

People in the paddock booed quite loudly when Worrall did a poor pass.
Sadly it's something that afflicts our crowds . Short memories .

That is interesting. In the paddock around me Worrall can’t do anything wrong and gets clapped for “unlucky” crosses but Monty gets abused for “terrible” crosses.
