I think Keir knows that any open and overt criticism of the government is likely to raise the ire of Middle-England "Now is not the time for finger-pointing scaremongering negativity" types, so is steering clear.

Perhaps he can have a word with the media?

Well, no, because that would defeat the purpose of the press. They aren't there to cheerlead the incumbent government, but to ask questions to ensure they're getting things right, and to accurately disseminate their findings.

If the government have the answers to the tough questions, then great, well done government. If not...

Great to hear and nice to know that even the right wing press are being respected for their comments.

Well the identity politics game is now fully being used against Labour. Sir Keir is negotiating his way around a minefield with his sacking of RLB and no further action against Steve Reed.

I don't for one minute think that Reed had even made the connection to the fact that his tweet was about a Jewish person, and could therefore be spun as it has been.

But, this is the game we're playing now, if you say something that can be called a "trope" or a "dog whistle" then we collectively assume the worst possible level of guilt and find against you in the court of public opinion.

Is Starmer making a rod for his own back? Is there any value in pandering further to this game?

Labour MP apologises for ‘puppet master’ tweet

Labour’s shadow communities and local government minister Steve Reed has apologised for a now-deleted tweet in which he described businessman Richard Desmond as a “puppet-master”.

Mr Reed was accused of antisemitism over the tweet because Mr Desmond, who is currently embroiled in a scandal over the Westferry development, is Jewish.

“I want to apologise unreservedly for the language in the tweet I posted on Saturday. It was inappropriate and as soon as I realised my error I deleted it,” the Labour MP said.

The issue is particularly controversial due to Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to sack Rebecca Long-Bailey as shadow education secretary after she retweeted an interview which contained an antisemitic conspiracy theory.

It is understood that no further action will be taken against Mr Reed after his apology.

An apology should be enough and not taken further. It’s ridiculous that we are now in a situation that people have to look up what these phrases mean as not to offend anyone.

Agreed phil.

Should labour politicians be in a position whereby they have to research what race or religion someone is before they tweet about them, just in case they're Jewish?

It's so stupid to automatically assume the worst intent of someone because you can score cheap political points.

I find it interesting that the reader of the word defines what the writers intent was.

Isn't Boris, or Cummings depending on your angle of vision, the puppet master? He pulls all the strings and people jump around like a marionette .... but I can't say that if he is Jewish.. I can if he is Catholic,  Protestant,  Buddhist, etc etc.

Does that mean that if enough football supporters banded together and said stoke city and football club in the same sentence was offensive it would get banned?........

Unfortunately there is many people who think it should. World gone mad, and leaders aren’t speaking out enough against this vocal minority.
