A left-back is a requirement and hopefully Taylor can be signed on a longer term basis. Other than that need to have a shuffle about and move out those that aren't performing and replace them with someone in the same position who hopefully will do better, full-back cover, central midfield.

I'd like to see a left back, winger and Taylor. After that I guess it's a case of movements out, for example if Kennedy goes permenantly we will need a better back up cb.

Outs; Lloyd (loan), Archer (loan), Trickett-Smith (loan), Campbell-Gordon (loan), Kennedy (perm or loan).

Ins; Taylor extension till the Summer, Left Back, Striker, back up winger (loan), back up winger (loan)

Get Manny back and contributing and I reckon we'd have a very tidy squad.

Priority has got to be on a proper left-footed, defensively solid left back, and a striker with a bit of pace.

Apart from the obvious LB and getting Taylor signed up, we may need cover in central defence. We can ill afford a repeat of what happened on Tuesday night to Brisley if he were playing in a game due to the enforced absence of either Smith or Legge.

Kennedy will be back from his loan but I’d rather someone better if possible.  A loanee could fit the bill.  We’ve done OK with loan CB’s in the recent past.

The key thing is that, whoever we sign, a couple who actually improve us would probably be enough to push us on, such is the fairly even nature of the teams in the league this season.

If we are going to make any serious 2nd half push for a top 7 place then we have to sign a good left back.

I didnt expect us to push this season, but with the unexpected windfall of the cup runs and with what's happening down the road, our time is now.  It might be 12 months early but we have to recognise the opportunity we have now got and grab it with both hands.

Agreed LB essential. As for others its not easy to ship out, we do have squad players who will not feature, if they are not good enough at twenty they never will be.

For me, we need a left back and another good midfielder who can help us control games. Walsall kept it better than us yesterday for parts of the game and they are one of the poorer teams. Our passing and movement is quite poor and games are won and lost by midfield superiority. Joyce and Taylor have done quite well but Taylor sometimes looks lightweight and is shoved off the ball too easily, and we still haven't got an all-action, dynamic, rottweiler who can win tackles/headers and give us some real aggression and drive. A fit Oyeleke, who knows? But they don't come cheap.

I do think the likes of Pope, Cullen and Bennett can score enough goals for a top seven finish but only if we provide them with better service from midfield and out wide.

It's a far better season than last year, mind, and we've made far more progress than I imagined we could.

We've got plenty of good midfielders, they just weren't available yesterday. Worrall and Joyce suspended, Oyeleke injured, Browne ill. Another specialist LB is a priority as we can't keep shoving Monty into that position, even though IMO he's better there than on the wing.

That would give us Worrall, Montano, Browne, Amoo plus 2 more wingers. Are we also going to sign a better 4th striker than Archer?

If Kennedy goes we need a 4th centrehalf. Leftback would be useful. Taylor or a replacement and that's about it. There's a lot of player power in January and you end up paying over the odds.

Trickett-Smith needs to stay because he's got himself into the squad and they need to decide if he can cut it at some point. Archer likewise. Neither is young and both have played a fair amount of non league football, so little to gain from being out on loan, where we'll end up cutting a large part of the wage anyway. If the decision is they aren't good enough then try to move them on.

Contrary to other thoughts on here, I am happy with Montano at LB. I think we've been a better side since he's been playing there, offering another attacking option down the wing. He makes mistakes, he's still relatively new to the position. If he works at the position and continues to, then I think we have a more than adequate LB. The results since he started playing there back that up.

I really think we need a striker though. It's hard to say with Pope and Bennett sharing the position, but I don't think we've had enough goals from there. I think the goals have come well from the other positions and we're maybe 5 short from the strikers. Use the money to find the long-term Pope replacement in January if he's available (Wait until the summer if he's not). I like the expected goals stat and we're doing well with that. Which suggests we aren't finishing our chances off when we make them. Good goalscorers are hard to find, but there must be someone out there who suits the style we play at the right price.

Having said all that, we're doing better than I expected, so anything we do in January in terms of signings will be beneficial.

Phil Sproson will have to show his true colours. If he is an agent first and foremost I expect Taylor will go to the club which makes him the most money. If he cares about the Vale and Taylor he will persuade him to stay at Vale.

With loans, it's unlikely to come down to money unless another club is willing to pay a loan fee for him to Forest (I highly doubt Forest will be letting him go permanently). The loan club normally covers the salary, so it makes no odds financially unless there's a fee involved.

I think it will come down to whether Forest think his development is going to continue to the level they wish at Vale, or if they think he'd be better served stepping up a level to League One. The only issue for his development when doing that is, he may not may an automatic starter and may have to work his way in again. He is one of the first names on the teamsheet at Vale and we're not in a relegation scrap. Two reasons why I think Forest will extend him here until the end of the season.
