Are we a more attractive employer than we were last year? Certainly less to worry about. So we  should manage to replace or improve our players to progress next season.

Established secure manager, well-run club, evidence that we look after our players, incremental increases in attendances (regularly topping 5k now), more money in the pot, hopefully a top 10 finish.

If you're a League 2 footballer we won't be a bad option next year. Would be great to keep all of our players but as I've said, bar Worrall, I won't lose too much sleep if we lose any of them.

Next week will probably decide how we approach deadline day I imagine, if we lose to the top 2 we could conceivably be ten points off or at least eight or nine you’d think (no shame in that as them two are streets ahead). If that happens then planning for next season makes more sense and focusing on who we want to stay and starting to look to summer transfer activity with better value for money.

If we get four or six points and then sit in a good position to assault the play offs still then we may be more inclined to sign players now.

In terms of Smith... it’s a poor situation but one that’s been allowed to happen from before the current ownership, losing a big youth asset for nothing in the summer would be a gutting outcome for the club and fans as we’ve invested in developing him, given him and chance and got nothing then to show for it... he should of been tied to something longer earlier knowing he turns 24 so we could have the option this summer to cash in if he rejected an improved deal... but it wasn’t done and by the time Carol and Kevin come in Smith holds the cards in that he can sit it out and see what comes in during Summer 2020... that’s now taken out of our hands sadly and we should do what we can to hold onto him if it is just a few hundred quid if he signs a two year deal we then have the position to sell next summer and make money on him.

For Smith personally though he will do what is right for him and rightly so and can’t blame him. We all work to earn as much as we can and his career making a liveable wage in this field is likely 15-20 years.

It is a lesson though that we need to consider with Gibbons, we hold some power here as we get a fee at his age so we can probably secure him.

I had hoped we would see more in terms of Worrall (who has said he wants to stay and seemed like he wanted a new deal offered to secure him) and Legge ... big players and even Burgess surely who will be on a low wage should be offered and easily dealt with? No new deals this window would be concerning as we could lose them in the summer.

I heard him say something along the lines of "A few hundred quid" I forget who was doing the commentary was it Blakeman? he commented that it was a ridiculous situation for the club to get into and it should have been sorted out months ago.

Its a funny situation at the Vale, Denis Smith for Stoke wont say a word against them because he's on the pay roll at Stoke as an ambassador or Peter Morse at Crewe who does every game and wont offend the hierarchy in any way shape or form and then we get Ray Williams Phil Sproson and Chris Birchall who seem to have an axe to grind in one way or another against the Port Vale.

Not sure about the hatchet term but you could argue that it's much better than being surrounded by "yes men"?

If you watch Askeys vid today he’s clearly said that he’s not signing anyone just yet as everybody who’s out of contract will want to talk about a new contract....but he may decide to let some of them go.Anyway watch what he says. It makes sense

It’s interesting that he also says something along the lines of the players available not being better than what we have and that we have cover all over the pitch. Which kind of leads back to someone earlier mentioning that right back from Forest who was with us. I’m assuming he’s gone back and we aren’t looking at him?

Depends upon when Taylor is fit, should be  better value as we know what he is capable of, whereas a couple of unknown loans could make far less impact. Signing new players in the close season can get better value, so make realistic offers to players we wish to keep, and carry on scouting.

Askey is fantastic at not letting much out while seeming to answer everything. Not making permanent signings because too expensive, not making loan signings because too expensive. Deflects questions about new contracts. The reality is he would love 2 or 3 new players IF he can get the right ones at the right price and he would prefer permanent.  There are at least 6 players he desperateĺy wants to sign on new contracts. Behind the scenes there will be a lot of work going on.

I'm quite happy with things as they are. After the turbulence of the last few years, with relegation and flirting with non-League football it will be great to not have to sign half a team...again! Realistically, those first-teamers we want to keep will be asking for more money to sign renewed contracts - this is fine. If all our transfer kitty goes on retaining their services that continuity will be better than chopping and changing, again! I also feel Taylor has signed a new contract at Forest may be to ensure they get a fee from us in the Summer?? I trust in the Shanahans and JA...so much better than the last regime!

The uncertainty of contracts have worked for us so far.... Being optimistic if we made the play offs and got promoted which players in the squad would really want to keep for L1??

Gibbo and Worrall apart we should leave the rest until the summer.
