I was thinking about our squad last night and it has to be said that our manager has done a tremendous job so far to assemble the squad of players he has with the budget available to him. Without injuries and suspensions our first 11 is fantastic for this level, and we also have the strongest subs bench we've had for a very long time.

Being a League Two side with lower league players we will lose the odd game we probably should be winning and players won't always perform how you would hope this week, while the big man himself, Askey, won't always get it right with his starting 11, tactics and substitutions. But so far nobody can deny that he hasn't done a superb job, not only with his recruitment in the main but also for the team spirit we clearly have now that we never had under the likes of Aspin and Ribeiro before him.

Brown

Gibbons

Smith

Legge

Montano

Joyce

Oyeleke

Taylor

Worrall

Amoo

Cullen

Subs:

Tomlinson

Crookes

Conlon

Burgess

Browne

Bennett

Pope

I suspect that will be Askeys first choice team apart from two changes:

1. Bennett for Cullen, whether people like it or not Askey likes a big mobile forward to press and provide movement up front. And as mentioned, he has getting results with the tactic of bringing on a fresh striker to go at a tired defence.

2. Stuart Tomlinson is now a WWE wrestler, so Jonny Maddison would probably be on the bench 🙂

Many of the first 11 weren’t signed by Askey. It must be said that Aspo recruited good players, but Askey has added to these and, most importantly, released some alleged “less professional” players. He’s bought a unity to the squad and a style of play that Aspo could only dream of.

Sums it up nicely

I agree. Their is evolution, which can be tracked through the two managers tenures.

Prior to that it was carnage, so no surprise it's taking time.

Askey is wisely building on the strengths he inherited and putting his own stamp on things.

Obviously new ownership has given everything a boost, although some new owners would have had a clear out and started from scratch. I suspect some on here would have preferred that.

I've always argued for stability and steady progress and will continue to do so.

I'm very pleased with the progress, especially in the depth of the squad.

No one seems to mention that he got rid of some hood pullers and that has made those that were here last year better ! When you are in a dressing room with tozzers and they have big gobs it tends to make some players not try that hard as it seems like its too much of an uphill task. Askey has taken away some sheite and others are now thriving.... its an aspect of man management that generally goes unnoticed.

Guitar Ray made reference to the weeding out of less professional players in the other Asked thread that is currently, rather confusingly, running.

I like him! My kind of manager, for sure!

There’s nothing worse, than those loud, self-promoting managers, who sounds like they’ve been in the dressingroom the whole game, and just make stuff up for their interview. The Oldham manager and Kewell last season, springs to mind.

Askey just puts in the work, and lets the team performance speak for him. No fanfares or ott outbursts, just well thought through comments, that are always a fair assessment of the game.
I like him, and long may he be here!

As key is a great manager. Not so sure about the SHANAHANS..... bit sickly for me..... All fur coat no boxer shorts...

You'll get used to them.

Genuinely caring people can be a bit disconcerting.

We're just not used to decent, thoughtful and considerate behaviours.

Especially not in football!
