Match Thread: EFLT Port Vale v Newcastle Utd U21

I saw Newcastle's game at Shrewsbury and I saw no evidence of the Newcastle lads passing the Shrews off the park.  They have a couple of decent footballers in Young and the sub winger who came on, Fernandez, but the 3-0 didn't flatter the home team.  One thing to look out for is the the club's best defender, Florian Lejeune, who's played two of the last three games for the U23s while coming back from a bad injury.  Full back Jamie Sterry played against us when on loan at Crewe in the 2-2 draw a couple of years ago.

Should the match end in a draw we will have to endure another of those completely pointless penalty shoot outs.  Both clubs will get £5k prize money but Vale could not finish below first and Newcastle could not finish above 4th no matter what the outcome of a shoot out was.

Reading the comment's on OVF's home page about the Newcastle children hoping to 'play us off the park' as we are 'experienced and very physical'; why do I keep reading this lazy cliche? Every time I read a preview of our game from fans/managers/players, we're described as 'physical'.

Is it because we happen to inhabit the same city that Tony Pulis' Stoke City did?

We definitely have experience but for a lower league side I wouldn't say we were massively over-physical; our best player is a small winger, we have a short right back, a winger at left back, play a 433 system with good technical players in the middle and fast wingers. We're hard working but one of our centre halves is 5"11 ffs. Joyce, Taylor, Burgess, Gibbons, Worrall are far from physical. Even Amoo and Monty, who are big, are hardly 'physical' footballers. I'd agree Legge and Bennett fit the mould, but its 2 out of 11.

Every week I see opposition managers saying "we know what to expect; Vale will be a tough side, physical and experienced" which just underlines to me that they have no idea how we play. Lo and behold, we're 1 loss in 10.

I'm not arguing we're prime Barcelona but every single week I read this lazy accusation of us being Pulisball 2.0 because we're an unfashionable club in an unfashionable area. We play reasonable football and have some very tidy technical players.

You are spot on about this Joe!  I don't see any way we could be described as  "physical".  In fact i would argue we haven't been physical enough over the last few years!  Yes, we play a hard working, pressing game at times, so what. Never seen Liverpool criticized for it.  What i have seen for years is Pope consistently fouled in match after match with almost zero protection from every ref. (maybe the refs think like this as well and reason that he deserves it?) League 2 is renowned for being "physical", you have to compete or you have no chance. I think you are right in that it is easy to have a pop at clubs from Stoke on Trent - the area has an  "image" and does nothing to promote/defend itself. Perhaps we should start cheating and fall over if breathed on ala Crewe, would that help?  But no, I don't want us to play like that.  In any case, in this instance, I thought the whole idea was to show these pampered kids what football is like, not the pass it sideways routine they are used to? Maybe it's really to make them realise that they are not a half as good as they deludely think they are?  All of the millions that has been spent at Stoke over the years and were their kids any better than ours? It didn't look like it to me.     Hope Askey puts this crap up on the dressing room wall and uses it to motivate the players tonight.

I'm sure there will be a host of changes tonight, players like Legge, Worrall, Montano etc will surely be left out (for various reasons), but it is important, financially, to win and progress. UTV.

Let them pass us off the park... Crewe did it, MK did it... neither breached us and got beat.

Our second string should have too much for them.

Slight error on the OVF article... we actually have played Newcastle Kids before in this competition 2 years ago 1-0 win with Tyrone Barnett heading in the winner 🙂

No comments on the fact, that Conlon is back? I, for one, is very happy to see that!

Be interesting to see who plays fullback. A midfield 3 on Conlon, Evans and Atkinson looks decent but I guessing at least one will be in defence.
