It's BIG result for common sense. As this resounding result proves, the people of Britain are 'conservative' with a small "c" and will never vote for a party with left-wing Marxist ideologies.  However the evidence so far this morning is that those at the top of Labour aren't learning the lessons that this election result is giving them. John Ashworth (despite all his denials on Wednesday) was absolutely spot-on; Corbyn was "toxic" for the Labour cause.  I'm happy that so far, they appear not to understand any of this.  Suits me fine that unless they do wake up, Labour is becoming a party of irrelevance!

Absolutely spot on Bill.

It's not as if we haven't told them. They've completely and utterly buried their heads in the sand and ignored the facts.

I don't know if it's through sheer incompetence or if they're just completely delusional.

They need a reborn Labour party and they need it now. Any attempt to double down and blame brexit (a la Thornberry's garbled rant) will be terminal in my opinion.

It really is laughable how this has played out. I feel victorious and vindicated this morning. The treatment of the brexit voters and the result of the 2016 referendum is one of the most disgusting acts of betreyal in our political history.

The liars, the frauds, the anti-democratic tyrants in Parliament who have held the population of this country hostage since 2017 have been struck down ruthlessly. Exactly like we promised.

Regardless of how you voted in 2016, you have benefitted from the result of the 2019 election. It would have set a horrendous precedent if the result had been different.

For Labour to lose around here is a disaster for them and I feel sorry for the local candidates as they did little wrong. Corbyn was the gift that kept giving for the right wing press as every time they dug a hole he jumped in with both feet. He lacked any political nous and even needed Len McClusky to point out to him and his cohorts that ordinary working class people were worried about uncontrolled immigration affecting their wage prospects. There will no doubt be a battle between the left and moderate wings of the Labour party for the next leader but this should be a wake up call for the left and it wasn`t all down to brexit

Boris and his posh boy mates will be a disaster for this country and I worry where we will be as a country in 5 years time especially without the insurance that the EU provides to peoples rights.

I'm slightly annoyed this morning, woken up to a considerably weakened Labour party and now opposition, for me the slogan "Get Brexit Done" has given Johnson a massive majority.

For me it's not healthy to have a government that can do what it  wants unchallenged.

If only the result of the referendum had been respected,Labour would not have lost so spectacularly, Brexit would have happened,it's a pity that those who tried to thwart the will of the people can now look back on the damage it's caused.

Finally, as disappointed as I am that there seems to be no effective opposition to hold the government to account, the campaign led by Corbyn and the promises he made prove that the British public don't believe in unicorns and he should resign with immediate effect.

It's past worrying about but I wish some of you would accept a piece of factual information when I post it, instead of implying that I'm barking mad. If I post something that is wrong I'm happy to apologise. I'm more than happy to concede fair, well argued points. But I'm not accepting comments from people who don't read carefully what I post on the NHS.

William, I gave you the figures, population increase noted, for the amount of GDP% we spend per person on the NHS. 3.3% overall from 1947 to 2016 but only 0.6% from 2010 to 2017.

I've said many times in previous posts that raw spending on the NHS has gone up. But that isn't the point. The point is it hasn't increased enough to meet demand.

I'll give you a simple example to make it easy for you if you're struggling with a hangover from celebrations last night. Let's say it's 2010 and I'm spending £1 a year on my 2 kids. Are you still with me? Good. It's now 2019 and I've now got 3 kids and I'm now spending £1.20 on them. Ok? So my spending has gone up, yes, but it hasn't kept pace with what was needed. Demand has increased far more than my spending. And that's what has happened in the NHS. It's a very simple concept.

I gave you loads of factual references including one from the IFS. And this one. Read the damn thing.

https://fullfact.org/health/spending-english-nhs/

My friend, Phil from the seaside, you are not quoting like for like figures. You were quoting total spending on health - public and private. That wasn't what I was said. That figure, you are correct, is around 9.7% which places us 19/38 OECD countries. In 2017 it worked out about 3k per person. For comparison, France was 3.7k, Germany 4.5k.

Annual ongoing costs for PFI by the way are ridiculously high but amount to 2% of the NHS budget. It's proved extremely costly but did at least provide patients with more investment and what you don't say is that the Tories supported private initiatives and have continued down that path today. Selectively quoting Blair yet again and avoiding mention of the fact that it was Thatcher who introduced the Health Service Act and Internal Market Act, and Lansley's 2012 reforms that were a total disaster and increased privatisation by putting services out to tender. And now Rabb has given our health data to Amazon. Why are all these FACTS never mentioned?  But, as usual, you air brush inconvenient historical details, only blame one party, and try and laughably claim that the NHS's current crisis is all Labour's fault from 22 years ago. It's an amazing sleight of hand.

I suggest what you both do is (1) read more accurately all my posts on the NHS, and (b) get off to night school and retake your Economics GCSE because your understanding and interpretation of data is flawed.

This is a big result for Brexit.  There is now no doubt that the leave vote has much bigger support than I anticipated.

It's not a result I wanted but if we take a moment t to be positive then at least we now have a government that can actually govern, for better or worse.  We can now move on from uncertainty.  I can only hope now that the effects of Brexit are better than I fear, which of course they could be.

For me it's a sad day because I genuinely feel that before the end of this parliament the NHs will be up for grabs.  I think there will be more people thrust into poverty and more services farmed out to rich mates.  I think the initial period of this parliment will be viewed as a great success because Brexit will now happen at the end of January and the masses will rejoice at that, however in the years to follow I think you will see a deepening regret.

Congratulations to all those who voted for Johnson.  Your man romped home!

Can't argue with much of that, although like you I fear it will be a cause for regret further down the line.

I’ve just seen that Starmer, Long Bailey and McDonnell are showing an interest in becoming the Labour leader. This is bad news fir the party and if you had to choose it would be Starmer, however he’s a massive remainer.

They need to start again and target voters with decent policies and strategy. Snell has said it’ll be a Tory government for the next 20 years, probably the most sensible thing the bloke has said, so Kabour need to do something to stop this starting today.

Boris needs to make sure that he doesn’t makes any massive blunders or get caught out telling more lies, he needs to show some integrity and make sure his party cleans up their act.

IMO a good Labour leader could be back in number 10, in the next election. These votes have been loaned to Boris for this election and personally I’m not sure he can retain them.

More importantly, we’ve still got C&K in charge.

The best thing about this is that the Labour party and those on the left seem to be in complete denial about why this happened. Like last time. And the time before. And the time before. Still cocooned in their social media echo chambers and their inner city bubbles. Long may their self destruction continue.

Just amazing how Labour's 'high command' are burying their heads in the sand--doesn't really surprise me as in their London-centric socialist bubble, they've shown scant understanding of the working vote and deserve the electoral kicking they've received.  I hope for the sake of democracy and the country long-term that Labour can re-form into a more sensible centre-left party.  However, as I keep saying, with Momentum holding all the levers of power within the party, it's unlikely to happen any time soon!

The one good thing to come out of this election is that the raisin d’etre of Farage, the Brexit Party and the ERG no longer exists. I suppose we should be thankful for small mercies.

It will be interesting to see if Johnson is his own man or a puppet of Cummings and Co. Prior to the referendum all his writings showed him to be a pro European one nation Tory. Will he revert back to what he actually believes or will he carry on changing his principles with the wind?

The problem for Labour was that Corbyn is at heart a Eurosceptic but didn’t dare say it so ended up spending the entire campaign waffling. The demise of Labour started when Milliband was elected instead of his brother and the election process for the leader was changed. We then had a number of centre left MPs being conned into signing Corbyn’s nomination papers just to give “balance” to the choice. A bloke who had spent years in Parliament voting against his own party and never getting near to a place in the government or shadow cabinet became leader. What a recipe for disaster!

Can't disagree with any of that--a vey fair summary! At least we can all now get on with our lives and turn to important things......like football & PV.  Up the Vale!
