Classic centrist blarting. We'll see. I don't think a politician has done more to engage the previously disenfranchised young than anyone in many many years. He's boosted Labour membership to the extent that it's one of the biggest parties in Western Europe, hauled the Overton Window leftwards and energised many many voters. I (and many others) believe that he is an intrinsically good man who has spent most of his life campaigning for equality and justice, standing up for the poor and vulnerable. Nice of you to call him a cretin though.

I called them all cretins.  Corbyn may be a nice man who works hard on his allotment but he is NOT a party leader.  He is weak and seems to be manipulated by the likes of Milne and his cohorts.  A leader with any backbone would have sorted the anti-semitism rubbish ages ago.  He only got on the leadership ballot paper because Margaret Becket was persuaded that they needed a left winger on there to give it a bit of balance.  He was a joke candidate and the joke's now on the Labour Party sadly.

I took part in some focus group/ market research event for the Times on Saturday and one guy was opining that we don't have a sensible moderate Labour leader that he could get behind. he stated that if we had one, we would be thrashing the tories. I said 'what, like Ed Miliband or Gordon Brown?' and he said 'yeah' but then went quiet. I'm not sure what people think a centrist Labour leader would achieve, it's not like Jo Swinson's lot are hoovering up any votes. In fact, they're shipping loads of votes to "cretin" Corbyn's Labour Party. I also question what people want from the Labour Party. Do you want a party that fights it's <ovf censored> backside off to stick up for the poor and vulnerable or do you want them to ignore those people and be terrified of rocking the boat and upsetting the Murdoch papers? Neoliberalism isn't working and we don't need a supposedly Socialist party manning the life support machine.

That guy was correct, a more moderate Labour Party would gain a majority at this climate. Labour will get in again, voted in by the younger generation, they will stand for one maybe two parliaments then those who voted for them will realise that they voted for a load of lies and they are no better than any other party and totally screwed the economy up. We will then see 4 or 5 parliaments of Conservative or a coalition until the next young generation come through who have not witnessed a Labour Government. History does tend to repeat itself.

Labour will not win an election until they get middle England on board.  You may not like to hear that but it's true.  If Corbyn doesn't win next week he will effectively have lost three elections - 2017, next week and the appalling performance in the EU elections.  You need the centrists on your side.  That's what Blair did and that's why he won three elections in a row.  You need someone who will look trustworthy against a cretin like Johnson.  You need someone who is intelligent and charismatic.  I'm afraid Corbyn is neither.

Labours vote in the last election was pretty average compared to other elections. Yes, higher than the previous election but no more than many others.

fact, not fake news.

Sorry, my mistake. I meant increased Labour's vote share rather than got their largest vote share.

I would want a Labour party that does the right thing by everyone.

You don't think he's either but a lot of people do. We'll see.

Cretin is a really horrible word, BTW.

I'm sorry the word offends you but it is how I feel about our current tranche of politicians.  They are a disgrace.

The fact that a lot of people think Corbyn is intelligent confirms what I said earlier about all of them - you can fool some of the people all of the time.  His academic record is poor and he struggles in interview when faced with a difficult question.  Contrast him with the likes of Blair, Heseltine or Tony Benn and he doesn't look very bright at all.

I don't really care how academically bright or educated he is. JRM and Johnson are 'bright'. Jeremy Corbyn was bright enough to campaign against apartheid when 'educated' Thatcher was calling Mandela a terrorist. He called out austerity when the Oxbridge-educated government were making cuts that killed people. He's intelligent enough to realise that unless we take extremely urgent measures to tackle climate change then we' re screwed as a planet, unlike the clever people on the tory front benches. He was also politically astute enough to realise that Labour becoming a remain party would be political suicide, despite his learned friends urging him to do just that. He may not have qualifications but, I believe, Jeremy Corbyn will do everything in his power to rid this country of the shameful poverty and cruel vindictive policies that the tories have overseen.

I really don't have a problem with Labour's policies and may well vote for them next week, although what that means in Gavin Williamson's seat is it's probably a wasted vote.

My problem is with Corbyn. We call out the Americans for electing the most unstatesmanlike President in history and what do we offer up as a choice for PM? A blond buffoon and someone who looks like he'd have a hard time as a college lecturer. Neither of them are in my eyes Prime Ministerial and either would cause problems.

I do hope it's Corbyn as living with Johnson as PM would be intolerable but I'd still be worried for the future.

But they are a remain party.

Fair post for me, Heatwave.

Was that Patrick Cormack's seat? You might as well pin a blue rosette on a pig there.

Like you, I find it almost impossible to comprehend how anyone intelligent would vote for Johnson. Some would say the same for Corbyn but Johnson is streets ahead as an immoral, pathological liar. And it's a wide choice not an either/or.

Johnson looks odds on, so the only way to stop him is to vote tactically. There is a tiny chance if that occurs. I could cope with a coalition of Lab, Lib, Green, Independent and nationalist parties. But, like you, a Johnson, hard-right Tory government worries me. And not just me but Heseltine, Major, Grieve, Stewart, and a whole host on one nation, right of centre politicians who have deserted the sinking ship and allowed it to be taken over by a nasty intolerant cabal.
