Speaking to Steven Harper recently (ex Vale) and he recalls when Worthington turned a game around once for Preston North End in 1987 when Vale played there (They had the plastic pitch then) and Vale were 2-0 up ended up losing the game 3-2 and Worthington put in a really game changing performance

My claim to fame - I used to live next door to where Frank Worthington lived in the 70s (Syston, Leicestershire). Frank was long gone by the time I got there but he was well remembered.

Seriously, there's a lot being said at the moment about the incidence of dementia and motor neurone disease in ex pros. It's being linked to heading the heavy leather ball before the mid 70s - although the ball had to be of regulation weight, as I well remember as soon it was scuffed it picked up moisture and came at you like a bullet.

The jury's still out on this and research is ongoing into heading the vinyl ball but I hope it's a short term problem.

He had a handful of caps I think, but he played in an era where ability at international level was seemingly frowned upon.

Rodney Marsh and Stan Bowles are but two others who fell into a similar catagory.

One of my favourite lines on this topic is that Jimmy Greenhoff did not get a single cap, yet brother Brian got 18 !

No wonder we never win anything !

You're right.

I can't remember many of the games but I recall very fondly Joe Mercer's tenure in temporary charge.

From memory I think he played 4.4.2 with two wingers and went out to entertain the public, with players like the ones you mentioned plus Barnes, Keegan and Weller.

Happy memories, with Frank W right at the top of the tree.

The word “maverick” could have been made for Frank. Lived life to the full and boy could he play football.

For any younger fan who has not had the fortune to see him play, this is what he could do !

I could watch that goal all day !

This remains one of my absolute favourite goals and one that will represent his talent forever.
