Schmeichel bottling it after David Busst snapped his leg like one of those chocolate matchmakers.  Shawcross slipping for Van Aanholt to run through.....

Just been reading an article about football 34 years ago in Division One.This was the time when Oxford Utd and Coventry were competing in Englands top league.Some of the attendances are interesting.

How times have changed?

These fixtures took place on 9th November ‘85, just 6 months after the Heysel disaster.

From memory, this was a time when hooliganism was rife and the deaths at the European Cup Final was the fiinal straw for a number of fans. Hence supporters stayed away in their droves to lower ever decreasing attendances even further.

We played out a 1-1 draw at Vale against Stockport in front of a surprising 5,248 spectators. 85/6 season was a promotion one for us, so presumably we had had a decent start which resulted in a decent crowd.

But those top league gates are surprising even taking the situation into consideration.

This graphic shows the decline in attendances in the late 70s and early 80s.  Hooliganism, as RR says, drove people away.

Man Utd's average that season was 42,000.  Liverpool had won the league three times in a row up to that season and their average was 34,000.  Football grounds in those days were total pigholes.  Crumbling terraces, toilets worse than the Bycars and the risk of getting your head kicked in.  In the circumstances, it's suprising so many people did turn up!

The biggest surprise for me in that list was the attendance at Leicester.I'm not sure what the capacity was in 1985 at Filbert Street but the attendance of 8,080 really surprised me.

I was at Filbert Street for an FA Cup quarter final replay against Wolves in 1972 and there were 37,000 there.

I went in 1990 with the Vale and the attendance was over 10,000.
