Homelessness

Figures just released show that a record number of homeless people died on the streets last year. 726 people, mostly men, passed away, a 22% increase on the previous year. About 40% of these were due to drugs. Stats show that there has been a 165% increase in people sleeping rough since 2010 when the tories and LibDems took charge but the 'real' number of homeless is estimated to be significantly higher than that.

I don't really know what the answer is but, as with most issues like this, it largely comes down to money. The explosion in people on the streets since 2010 has been so alarming and it's so sad that it has now become commonplace and almost accepted.

I work quite closely with homeless workers and it's such a heart-breaking job, I couldn't do it. We had a debate in the office recently about what people will and won't offer to homeless people and how much of it is a 'lifestyle choice'. Wondered what people's thoughts are on here?

I think the easy answer is to build more affordable and social housing, convert whatever is available into "comfortable" living space and control private landlords more..... but that's really just a sound bite because as you suggest it's a money problem and a time problem.... and although statements are often made they are soon forgotten and the will seems to fade.

The drugs problem is slightly different..... I just don't understand it.

Obviously there will be no cast iron reason relating to all rough sleepers as to why they live on the streets. Each individual case will no doubt vary from person to person so it is difficult to put all homeless people into the same “box” But I personally find it difficult to understand how people end up in this situation.

I work throughout the UK and one thing that is patently obvious to me is that at least 90% of rough sleepers are male. If there was a common denominator as to the reason why people are homeless  then you would expect the split to be roughly 50/50. But it clearly isn’t.

Drug abuse would certainly appear to be a major factor, but it cannot be the complete reason. I have no first hand knowledge of any homeless person to have any insight into there problems.

But the fact that the problem is predominately male focussed has always confused me. Are girls more disciplined to avoid this situation ? Do they, because of their gender, get more help from social services ? I really don’t know.

And, more worryingly, I have no obvious answer.
