Match Thread: Port Vale v Plymouth Argyle

Recommended Posts

Brown 7

Gibbons 7 Smith 8 Legge 9 Crookes 7

Joyce 8 Montano 8 Worrall 8 Taylor 7 Browne 7 Bennett 7

Endeavour 8

Spirit 9

Will to win 10

Crowd 8 really got behind the players second half but that’s credit to the players as they gave us plenty to shout about

UTV

We look very dangerous when we vary our free kicks corner routines etc .

Shame about the injuries but that’s football .

Thought we we played well and now have players on the bench like Taylor (who given a fair chance could turn out to be a decent signing) and Browne (who was here there everywhere). How anyone can criticise Smith defies logic as he was immense yesterday.
Just hope we can keep it up for the next few games.Yesterdays injuries could catch up with us if Amoo is out for a spell.

Controversial since Browne is one of the Macc reserves (you would’ve claimed in pre-season)

Think Browne played 63 games for Yeovil in the last two years after being on loan at Macc from Grimsby.

Has a better pedigree than some of the players Askey wasted the budget on.

Be careful giving Smith 8 ( think it should have been 9 same as Legge).

Out of interest did you actually attend the game or did you listen to Radio Stoke?

I was at the game my second game of the season as went the Northampton one aswell .

Was in the park Inn for a pint of doom bar before the game and nipped in after for a blackcurrant soda after as driving  my son and nephew home to take and Silverdale relatively after the game .

Good I like the words rammed down my throat .

The level of energy committment and no lack of skill won that game .

Very encouraged by what Askey is laying down .

Just watched the highlights back again, Bennett is quickly becoming in my eyes an absolute diamond of a find.

The movement and presence of mind to know where Smith was for the assist. His close control and dribbling to set Montano up just after, absolutely top draw!

Diamonds have to be polished, so it takes time for the sparkle to shine. The clever bit is finding them in the first place, and to be able to take the rough and tumble of L2 as well as being capable of L1.

well what can you say what a performance from the lads I think most us feared the worst when gibbo got booked after 10 minutes and then we had to use all our subs after 35 minutes, but what a 2nd half performance from the lads our fitness levels shone through and we were actually pressing Plymouth back till the final whistle, every player put in a cracking performance monty probably had his best half in a vale shirt even if he should have buried his chance to make it 2-0 but that's something we need to improve on being more clinical and putting teams to bed. lets hope archer amoo conlon and lewis aren't out for long. onto Exeter and hopefully another good result

I suppose it's human nature, theres a melt on a Vale faceache site, Carl, who says he's a Vale fan but hammers them remorselessly even when we do well, guess what ? I've noticed that when there is a good performance, recognised  by everyone, total silence, they seem to get greater pleasure from failure,it's a funny way of looking at life.

Noticed he didn’t post after the Plymouth game.

Is that the Carl who always rings P&G moaning about the Vale?  I always feel like topping meself after he's been on!

Ive got no idea, the name could just be a coincidence but God does he moan and set unrealistic goals for the team.

Yes it is Jean , always on faceache, slagging off performances, and usually on the radio doing the same. Always questions Askeys position as manager.

Anyone who comes onto P&G and keeps wanting to refer to their previous quotes as some sort of Vale guru is just doing so to gain attention that is probably missing in their day to day life. It’s a bit of a shame really. Also, does anyone cringe when the young woman comes on and spouts about how great we are, the has to get a dig in at Sjoke?  Last year, she was the one who tried to mitigate some of our “bright youths” throwing flares back at the unwashed, because they threw them at us.

A lot of football battles are won and lost in stats and maths now. There’s commercial software out there used by all clued up professional clubs that assists with scouting and match analysis. Literally do a database search for a league one full back with X number of successful interceptions per Y number of attempts who’s also under 28 but above 6’3 and it’ll spit out the results just like football manager. The big one is called Wyscout. Video clips and stat analysis on everything. Proper Moneyball. The better equipped clubs have cameras running during the match and have monitors in the dug out for live analysis and instant replays. That Man City documentary on amazon showed they have monitors up in the dressing room at HT showing the players what areas or vulnerable oppo players to press.

I’m glad that analysis site picked up this behaviour from Crookes below as it’s something I noticed a few times in the first half.

He’d go and challenge the header, but in doing so would leave an awful amount of space behind for the potential flick on from Edwards if he won it - which Edwards did constantly. Can’t recall Crookes successfully challenging it once. I worried every time it happened that the flick on would find Mayor or Sarcevic who’d play through a totally unmarked Moore to go clean through. Fortunately it didn’t happen.

This sort of stuff is what Notts County’s new owners do for a living which could work out really well for them but I’m hopeful that the Shanahans experience and expertise, contacts in and appreciation of big data and IT will lead to investment on this side of the game for Vale. Obviously we already have a video analysis set up but becoming one of the better football league clubs at doing it outside of the riches of the top of the championship with carefully considered and reasonable investment and facilities can only be a good thing and could directly lead to a somewhat bigger points tally every April. Higher finish/promotion = more FL prize money. Rudgey isn’t going to be round watching transfer targets forever. The top clubs invest in data analysis for very good reason, it gives them the edge in acquisitions and winning games.

The level of planning even in division 2 is quite high. It also makes it harder for fans to judge who is in the wrong as players have roles to take against particular teams and quite often the mistake is made because another player isn't where he should be ..... so someone is split between where he should be defending and a space left by someone else. Some of the scrapier games (Newport was one) are because both teams have done their homework and then constantly adapt to changes the other has made, so end up just cancelling one another out. Every video of every game is pretty much available now so there are few secrets.

Totally agree. I said at half time on Saturday that we’d obviously set up to virtually go man for man, and going back to a point made earlier we saw our full backs put a real shift in to close down their wing backs. But at times they had a runner doing past our full back and in to the full backs space behind them with no one tracking him from midfield.
