Match Thread: Newport County v Port Vale

I also think that Askey has a clear long term plan.

I totally agree that we are a quality midfielder short... But he stated that getting goals in the team was his big issue and from having just Pope and Miller last year we suddenly have a plethora of attacking options and equally impressing wing stock.

My guess is that this is his year to test the forwards and see which options work best in which combinations and scenarios. Askey obviously feels confident that the midfield can cope, especially as its slow and steady improvement that is required. No one is pressuring him to get promoted this year. And its noce to think that, all things being equal, Askey will be here for a few transfer windows where he can mould and shape.

Once the striker experiment has reached it conclusion this year, could we see a reduction in the numbers there and the extra salary being used on that missing midfield jigsaw piece next year?

The Shrews game showed that the backup players have the ability to add something to the team... the joys of a squad and a long term plan!

Wouldn’t be surprised to see the same team as last week but with that said, Cullen, Taylor, Kennedy and Archer all gave Askey something to think about on Tuesday.

Even Callum Evans had a good game and looked to be that bit of strength and toughness you need in the middle.

Would take a draw here as Newport are a decent side.

After them going 16 games unbeaten a draw would be a fantastic result... We just need people on here to keep calm and not fly off the handle if we dont get the result we want away at a very very very good side.

I think he will keep faith with Bennett for this game, but Archer will be knocking on the door very quickly. From listening to Askey’s interviews, he seems exactly the type of Striker he was looking for. Powerful (6.3 and apparently decent in the air) and has pace to burn to get behind defenders.

I also get the feeling he rates Jake Taylor highly, and will be looking to get him in the starting 11.

The team I think he will pick on Saturday:

Brown

Gibbons Smith Legge Crookes

Taylor    Joyce   Conlon

Worrall   Bennett  Amoo

Or he could stick with Monty and drop Worrall back into midfield again.

Thoughts?

Based on Tuesday night you'd say Taylor was behind Evans and Lloyd, who both had good second halves. Taylor did look good off the bench on Saturday. If it was at home I'd stick with the team from Saturday. I could see an argument for Evans away at Newport instead of Montano as I think he'd be the best of the 3 if we were under the cosh.  The advantage of keeping Montano is you're giving defenders essentially 4 attacking players to worry about and he is a little quicker than Worrall so will help keep both fullback honest. Worrall clearly has to play in one of his two positions. I think he'll probably carry on with the team from the last league game, unless he feels strangling Newport in midfield is the best way to get a result.

As long as they go down trying

Would love to see Archer play , but I think he needs to be upfront along side another striker. Great options for sub though, his pace in the last 20-15 minutes could be telling for us . In fact I think we have good options on the bench for all positions . Looking decent.

Seeing how West ham kids did on Wednesday I'd say pace will panic that Newport defence start with Worrall and amoo and have archer and browne on the bench for the last 30-35 minutes. Tough game but if we play how we have most of the time we can give anyone in this league a good game

I really don't think the West Ham game will have any bearing on Saturday. Newport made nine changes in the starting line up from their last league game.

Only bearing will be their striker who has started all games so far & apparently went off with a hamstring injury according to their fans. Hopefully that's the case, I can see he went off after 20 minutes anyway. Also some are saying Inniss may have played his last game, the sending off was for an alleged bite so they may not want to keep him.

Those fixtures are horrible. Suppose it’s best to get them all out of the way! As for tomorrow would take a point 100%. Very good side personally think they’ll go up this season. I’d be tempted to go with archer as he looks a real find. May be a big asset off the bench though. 1-1 amoo to score again.

They've a few missing through injury, suspension and an international call up so we have a chance here. Win here would be a great boost and really put us in the front runners.

 I've enjoyed this week.

After a decent start, Grimsby happened.

I got the impression that we were more cautious against Cambridge, which created the rather dire spectacle that it was.

However, Amoos late magic turned it into 3 points.

Tuesday night gave, perhaps much needed, reassurance about the squad, and another win.

We might have to hang on to those memories as we embark on 4 very difficult looking fixtures.

A good performance and a point would be an excellent return tomorrow.

This is the start of a challenging set of fixtures. I’m quietly positive about our next four games. Let’s put the Grimsby result behind us but on a positive it may have given us a dose of reality.

i see us getting at least one point from the games against Exeter and Newport and at least three from the Plymouth and Mansfield games. The first two are top of the league and the other two aren’t meeting their pre season expectations. We are stronger and look more balanced than last season with different playing options. I also feel now that we have players on the bench that could actually be in the starting eleven.

At the start of the season I was hoping that we’d be safe by Easter and finish in 14th position. I’m not getting carried away or intoxicated on our current position because I thought we played poor against bat a poor Cambridge side on Saturday, but I think we can finish 9th/10th

Newport away after the last awayday mauling.

Id go with a positive go at them team but keeping the back door firmly shut

       Brown

Gibbons Smith Leg Kennedy Cr

Worrall  Evans Joyce Amoo

                 Bennett

Three centre half’s towhead everything and block all shots .

Two wing backs joining in and Evans to get the nod over Conlon.

Bennett to be given 45 minutes to prove he is and was the right choice if not Cullen and Archer to replace Bennett and a centre half if we need to .

Keep it tight and as game wears on hit them with everything .

Great that Popey is not solely relied on any more but fantastic to bring him on if we need hold the ball up the field as game goes on and the1-0 lead is looking more suspect if indeed we take the lead .

    Crookes Smith Legge Gibbons

    Worrall   Joyce

  •

    Taylor

    Archer      Amoo

                     Bennett

Take the game to Newport...atttack attack attack. No more one man up front...it won't work away from home...take the game to Newport use the strengths of Taylor whom is an up and down  the park midfielder...let Amoo use his full mobility to help out up and down the pitch and let Archer play a 'in the hole' behind Bennett...a recipe of a nightmare for any defence. Stick with the clean sheet defence from Saturday..go for a second clean sheet

Very tough month ahead on paper, any points today would be very welcome. Tough test, good chance to see how we cope, and how were progressing, defence needs to stand strong and maybe we can nick one on the break. Might see the pace of archer and Cullen being a key factor late on. Need to still be in the game on the hour mark. Come on boys!!!
