Match Thread: FLT Port Vale v Shrewsbury Town

A minor money spinner, but useful all the same.as a work out against a L1 side. A chance to try out new player combinations, especially Taylor who trained with us during the summer, but has only joined us a few days ago. Also keep an eye on Saturdays game against unbeaten Newport, toughest game so far, avoid injuries and strain on some of our players. No doubt Askey would be pleased with a win against his previous club..

I assume Popey will start?

If he does then I imagine that will mean he won’t be starting against Newport in saturday.

Purely for the sake of continuity I’d keep the same back 4 except swap legge for Brisley.

I'd put Cullen or archer in, maybe start both and go 4-4-2 even. I’d also start Taylor in the midfield as well. Id even contemplate putting Lloyd or Burgess in just to rest someone, because realistically neither are going to feature at Newport.

Can't remember what the rules are for the number of changes you can make, but I'd definitely be looking to give RCG, Kennedy, Evans, Burgess, Brisley and Archer 90 minutes in this game.

According to the EFL website, we must play 4 outfield players that started on Saturday. So that leaves 6+1 places up for changes.

So my guess is, this will be no more than a reserves fixture...

I don't get all this constant talk about going 4-4-2, as Askey has said numerous times, that he prefers not to.

The system he wants to play, is 4-3-3 and as he more than implied post match on Saturday "no matter how much people shout in his ears", just as it should be!

Don't have to have started in the last game. You can also just play 4 players with over 40 first team appearances. Not sure if Conference games are included in that number. Cullen, Whitfield, Pope, Brisley and Browne definitely qualify. If National League games count so would Lloyd, Evans and Kennedy. There should be enough flexibility to rest as many players as they want. If Forest have a cat 1 Accadamy Taylor is also a qualifying player.

Swap it around. Rest key players like amoo and Worrall. Get the likes of Kennedy and Evans some time on the pitch. Cullen to start and possible archer at some point as well.

Couldnt care less about the result but it’s a good fixture for us if we use it properly and get some game time for the squad.

I know most will probably suggest the idea of sending out a mostly reserve team for games people care very little about early on. On the flip side though, in a season where we are unlikely to be promoted (& on the face of things so far, relegated), a decent cup run in this (& maybe a few rounds in the FAC) could be invaluable for our new owners sorting out the club. Looking towards January/next year, why not prioritise this & try to get as far as possible? Most other teams will be sending out reserve sides in this so it could be slightly easier money than we think too.

If we could get quite far or somehow even win it, it would give us a massive boost both financially & in keeping the good vibes going from the transfer of ownership in the summer.
