Match Thread: Port Vale v Cambridge United

Reality check after the Lord Mayors Show. Pick our selves up, hopefully Monty will be back.  Although  Oldham`s win  showed Cambridge`s defensive frailties, it was scorning lots of chances that cost them the game,  so press them hard. We have a full week to recover, they have a Cup game at Swansea in the week, whether they will rest Richards there who knows. Early days yet, still tuning the team,  and learn from each game. There is  still time to add a player or 2, but lets be positive lets grab 3 points.

With out doubt we lack both strength and quality. If all the players give there all we can compete anything less than 100% then we are in trouble. We really do need a couple of quality players ! Can we afford them? Can we afford not to have them? After Tuesday I am gutted the the result yesterday, wondering where the defensive frailties have come from.

I’d bring Pope back in for Bennett regardless.

If Manny is fit then for me I’d be putting him straight back in, dropping Lloyd and putting Worrall and Amoo on the wings. If Manny isn’t fit then Monty out wide for Lloyd.

Think last week was a blip. Without Monty and Manny we should go 4 4 2 for the start as we don't seem to have the personal for 4 3 3 effectively.

Totally agree, we need either Worrall Amoo or Monty taking up those 2 positions either side of the centre forward. Lloyd isn’t the answer there.

Maybe so, but no way Askey will abandon his 433, especially only after one loss. Already mentioned it in interviews this season about too much focus on formations I think.

Manny won't be fit, along with Browne but Monty stands a chance of making it.
We need a good response on Saturday after last week's disappointment at Grimsby and it would be nice to get a two goal lead at some stage this season?
Looks like we go back to the team that played so well against Salford/FGR in that case! Pope/Bennett being the only question mark

Is our central midfield strong enough to play 4 4 2 ?

Nope

All this talk about formations and 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-5-2 doesn't matter. It's how you set up within the system, that matters. 4-3-3 can be more defensive than a 5-3-2, and vice versa. It's all about how you impose the style you want, than about formation. All these numbers, has become such a fashion thing to talk about. If the formation was so important, every team should just line up the same way as Man City, and they would win every week.

It's just like a few years ago, when all they cared about on tv, was possession. In my view, because it was easy to understand for every viewer and didn't take much thought for the pundits to discuss. But it's not important just having the ball, it's what you use it for when you have it. Barcelona often had over 80% possession in their matches. But over 60% of that possession, was in their own half. So they defended, by having the ball, passing it around until the perfect opening to break through came. But people didn't care about that because "wow, they had it over 80% of the time, they have such an attacking style".

Every setup has it's pros and cons. 4-4-2 is just the easiest to coach and the easiest to act in as a player, because it's so basic.

I don't really give a hoot what system we play, as long as we keep creating chances as we did in the first 4 matches. We can't keep missing so many chances as we have, some day we are bound to start hitting the net, instead of the concession stand!

A Danish coach once said: "statistics are like a mini skirt. You can see a bit, but it hides what's most important"
