Has a successful international manager ever gone and done the business in the league?

O'Neill sounds a lot like Chris Coleman; overperformance with a lowly international side via defensive football, and he went to a team bottom of the Championship soon after relegation from the Prem. Look how that turned out.

O'Neill hasn't even done that brilliantly; a second round exit at Euro 2016, losing to Wales. They only got through as the 4th best team who finished 3rd in their group (if that makes sense). They played 4 at the tournament, and lost 3. The win was against the mighty Ukraine, who lost every game they played.

So, to summarise; he's a man who managed semi professionally in Scotland, and then Shamrock Rovers in the Irish Leagues (a league I reckon Vale could have a tilt at).

He's then gone on to win 1 of 4 at the Euros, the first ever Euros to feature 24 teams instead of 16, and widely criticised for an inclusion of teams not usually good enough to play. There, he won one game, against a team who lost every game they playeda. He qualified for the second round via being the 4th best team to finish 3rd (the literal worst team to qualify), where they lost to Wales, a country with the population lower than Mongolia and Eritrea, and whose national sport is Rugby. They qualified for said Euros by topping a group with the biggest challenge being Romania and Hungary.

He sees his players half a dozen times a season, he has probably led about 50 coaching sessions in 3 years, has no experience of the transfer market in any professional capacity, and is famed for dour, defensive football. This is a club in terminal decline, with 10-12,000 fans voting with their feet in the last 12 months, a disastrous uncoordinated transfer policy, in need of a shake up and galvanising.

I'll let you lot make your own mind up...

OK, lets say Askey was sacked, and Carol swooped for a manager with this record in domestic football. Let us forget him losing 3 of his 4 games and being knocked out by Wales in a Euros which purposefully included more teams than ever before, instantly degrading the 'taken NI to a major finals for the first time in 30 years' rubbish. I honestly reckon we'd, rightly, kick off at this:

Brechin City Scotland 4 April 2006 13 December 2008 114 49 31 34 42.98 [36]
Shamrock Rovers Republic of Ireland

15 December 2008

28 December 2011 151 83 32 36

54.97

This is Doha with your monthly reminder that we will be playing and battering the shlt at least once next season as their L1 side will be fully entered into the tinpot trophy.

Next update the first Thursday of December.

Thank you for watching scumwatch.

Programme ends.

Apparently he'll be going back to manage NI during the next international break.

So this is a club on the brink, 3rd tier football after having money literally handed to them for existing for other a decade, in dire financial FFP trouble and in desperate need of an instant boost to win back over 10,000 lost fans and to re-energise a clearly drained squad.

Our mate Michael is off on his jollies for the week!

Said it before and I'll say it again; we are a better run football club, when resources are taken into account, than that absolute shower. Imagine saying that 2-3 years ago.

A man in the pub ( not OVF’s man in the pub !) has been spouting off that his daughter has been at the council house today for a tour of the ground. She says that Pulis was there. He then rang the bookies and lumped some wedge on TP being the new old manager for a third time.

Make of that what you will.

Sounds like some bloke at the pub has lost a wedge to the bookies?

If Stoke appoint O’Neil, they might as well give up the rest of this season and start in Lg1 next year imo.

Managing a team like N Ireland where all the players are desperate to play & do well for their country is a lot different to managing a bunch of overpaid mercenaries at Stoke.

To be fair to Stoke, they’ve obviously been watching a football documentary and are trying to replicate it to the last detail. Unfortunately for them they’ve been watching the Sunderland one and not the City one!

Trying to put my serious head on, if O’Neill was to be appointed it would be an incredibly risky one.

Woakesy above makes a good point about doing ok with average players who desperately want to do well for their country. But he would not command the same level of respect that he gets from fellow countrymen from a bunch of “show us your medals” foreign mercenaries.

Then there’s the meteheads in the Boothen !

If O’Neill is appointed I think it automatically seals their fate

Let’s hope so.

The similarity between the Sunderland documentary and Stokes situation is remarkable, both rock bottom of the Championship, both got over paid prima donnas, both got highly paid chief executives, both employ a British national manager, lets all pray the outcomes are the same.

O'Neill was done for drink driving last year, which is what they sacked Berahino for.

I know this because the shlt fans have found out and are now arguing amongst themselves about it on the scumcake

John Coates is a Vale fan, na na na

Must admit I was concerned when I first heard he was their new man as he has a good reputation. But yes, looking at the facts like that they are in deep trouble. Definitely the obvious comparison is Chris Coleman at Sunderland. And he had done a much better job at international management, had actual Football League experience, and Sunderland I'm sure we're in a much better position than Stoke are now.
