Interesting that within the last hour David Kevan has mentioned Patching as a trialist (still at the club) and described the lad as
a creative attacking midfielder seemingly a bit of a playmaker but also a midfielder who likes to break forward and join the strikers.
So could Patching aged 20 six foot offer something box-to-box maybe not as yet a regular starter but perhaps an option off the bench.
Think that with Pope/Bennett/Cullen as strikers and Amoo/Worrall/Montano/Browne as wingers plus Whitfield while still at the club then that is plenty of options for the front three and the real concern that needs sorting is a centre back before anything else.
With Manny's injury record he could be playing alot more than you think. Joyce and conlon doing the dirty work leaving Manny/Patching to do the creative work appears to be what JA is pushing. Worrall has done well there in his absense, but to have an actual proper cover for Manny would make more sense.

Worrall has been excellent playing in a midfield three in the absence of Manny and is the one most likely to break forward and press with Joyce and Conlon doing the "dirty work".......presumably Patching has done a full pre-season at County and is not far off match fitness but isn't Burgess also an option on the right of the midfield three.....anyway along with Lloyd it is good to have options and cover in midfield but the real urgent concern remains the need to sign a centre back.

Anyway could be an interesting potential signing Patching not to forget Trickett-Smith and Hurst out on loan till January it does seem that with a three year contract Askey is looking to build for the future.

He needs to accept the reality that he doesn't play for Bournemouth any more and decide if he wants to play football or count his money. Harsh I know but that is life as a professional footballer.

Because his stats say he never played one 1st team football game for Bournemouth it makes you wonder why he was snapped up by them.

Could have just been a numbers game. At any level of academy age groups they already have an idea of certain players that they have a feeling could make it, whilst the rest of kind of making the numbers up a bit.

You are probably right.

Premiership clubs receive hundreds of millions from TV companies alone, apart from their own income streams. Many of them have squads of 30-40 players and they sign up young prospects left, right and centre for what is peanuts for them, and if just an odd one comes off further down the line.....

Last year, didn't Chelsea have something like 40 players out on loan?!!

Yes they had a ridiculous amount of players out there. This is why the premier league IMO is bad for the development of a lot of young players. Stock piled and some not playing competitive football til into their early 20s. Plus they’re given massive wages so they already think they’ve made it without actually accomplishing anything.

Sorry to use bad language on here but even in the Championship the same thing happens. Down at Stoke they have had very few young local lads coming through. The right back, Edwards, is thought to be a prospect but Jones paid millions for Smith from Huddersfield to play there. Campbell up front is another. But they've signed 3-4 strikers in front of him.

More important, from our point of view, is that the deadline is only about a week ahead now so we might see an arrival or two next week perhaps.

You see that Newport have added Innis to Howkins? Bit of height there if they stay fit

I remember being in a meeting with Bill Bratt (sorry about the bad language myself there) where he was addressing the academy and a group of parents,  I suppose it was around 8 or 9 years ago maybe. At that time there was a lot of uncertainty about whether the academy set up was going to be closed, and he was trying to assure parents that they were doing all they could to keep it open, and for parents not to panic, he was also talking about not being blinded by the bright lights of the team down the road and trying to persuade parents not to try and push their children down the road. He was citing examples of the players we had brought through in the past and was also highlighting the very same point you make that Stoke were not blooding their academy players and so the kids would be better off at Vale. It’s a very valid point even now, but within that group of players from u18s down we would have had in our system players like Smith, Gibbons, Turner, Boot, Lloyd, Raglan, Davis who have all made appearances for us (with varying degrees of success). But at our level we probably ave a different hope for the academy system, in that they bring through players who either have long careers with us or they are sold to make some money for the club.

Just a gamble, he appears to have potential, but is very inconsistent. We did offer £35K for him at the end of his initial loan but his agent blocked it.

After today would anyone take a punt on Grant?  Any other midfielders available?

I would have done anyway. Been obvious even before the season started we were short in midfield. Not fussed if he’s a difficult player to manager, he’s a good player and would improve us massively.

If he's so good why hasn't somebody signed him up ?

That's like saying why is that 12 bedroom mansion still on the market. Someone has to come up and write a big old cheque out

Obviously, but we are talking about a footballer not a 12 bedroom mansion,I hope Port Vale don't write a big old cheque out for Grant and I notice at the moment neither has any one else.
