The “Derek” Davis to whom it refers was the worst reporter Vale have had in my 60 years following Vale. I think he was just a news reporter who had no experience of covering sport. And boy did it show.

I was living abroad that season and my mum used to post me Sentinel match reports. Davis struck me as someone who was scared to death of Brian Horton so used to tell people everything was great, even when we were adrift at the bottom of the league and relegated by Easter.

From memory Santa, Davis was so useless that his Monday Sentinel report took the same line as Horton’s inane post Saturday match  comments. Davis could not think for himself.

Horton as we all know talked rubbish most of the time so consequently that’s what Davis wrote - rubbish.

I remember driving home after another dismal home defeat during Horton’s tenure and having the misfortune to listen to Nobby on Radio Stoke. When questioned about Vale’s lack of attacking intent he replied in that awful West Midlands accent “we had four forwards on the pitch” Indeed we did. However he omitted to mention that two were deployed  in midfield !

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but the mere mention of Horton’s name makes my blood boil. He continually used to say that “I’ve never been relegated”. After that Tranmere game he never said it again.
