The only two I remember in Hanley were quite close together. There was the one opposite where the museum is , just up form the Mitchell Theatre (I think) and then another on the other side of the road, further in to Hanley. Can't remember their names. Seems bizarre now having 2 cinemas within a stones throw of each other. I think it is really sad how these little cinemas, some with really beautiful designs, have been wiped out in favour of the identikit multiplexes.

The one opposite the museum was the ABC cinebowl, the other one you mention was the Gaumont, now theRegent theatre,  Then there was the Odeon on the opposite corner to the old sentinel office

Not unusual really, they only had one screen,  there were 6 cinemas in Hanley, but only the big 2 the Regent and Odeon mainly  showed the latest big films, the others would show lesser films or the repeat appearances at a lower price. The days of A and B films, 2 films and a newsreel, cartoon, all run continuously, people coming in and out at odd times.

Going back to the earlier posts, it was indeed the Essoldo in Tunstall at the top end of the High Street near the roundabout.

Barber's Picture Palace was is Station Road opposite the Memorial Park.

Both existed side by side for quite some time. I think Barber's is now a block of flats and I'm unsure what happened to the Essoldo. It became a bingo hall but has it now closed/been knocked down?

If I remember correctly one of the Hanley cinemas split and had 2 screens later..... the gaumont?.... I think.

My first film was at the Gaumont in Whitley Bay. It was Davy Crockett, King is the Wild Frontier. I must have about five!!

Aup Jean, was it Davy Crockett who had an Indian friend supposedly educated at Oxford? Or was it the Lone Ranger?

The lone rangers mate was tonto (Jay silverheels?) Who taught a lot of the "cowboys" how to fast draw.

All the ones I remember were pretty close together, near enough a similar distance to the gaumont/cinibowl
