On This Day

Just looking at the On This Day sidebar and wondered if we've ever had a more uninspiring day for signings than today.

  • 1993 Port Vale sign defender Peter Billing for £35,000.
  • 1995 Port Vale sign Dutch defender Jermaine Holwyn.
  • 2011 Port Vale sign former Sheffield United duo Kingsley James and Phil Roe.

Also Mr H. I noticed that today is the birthday of ex Vale loanee John Fleming.

He was signed on loan from Lincoln sometime in the late 70’s and his first game for us was due to be against his parent club. Surprisingly Lincoln allowed him to play against them.

90 minutes later we all understood why.

To think - Billing was actually the ‘star’ of that motley crew!

To be fair I didn't think Billing was that bad. Aren't we talking the top end of what is now league one? Compared to what we've seen in the last 3-4 years he was like Bobby Moore.

I think we forget how far we've fallen.

Sagi Burton was another one who did a solid job for us in league one and in the LDV trophy, without pulling up any trees. We tend to think of these lads as poor players but they'd walk into the current team, clinging on as we have done to our league status in the last 2 years.

I won't say happy memories but they were ok for us. I've seen much much worse.

Wasn't John Fleming Rudgie's first signing?

Think he was covering for Swanny due to injury, but he was recalled for the Autoglass and Baggies games, with differing levels of success!

Billing made his debut on loan in 92/93 in that West Brom game when it started snowing at a quarter past three and we came back to win 2-1 with the orange ball.

We signed him permanently that summer, he got sent off against Barnet when it was 0-0 and was used mainly as a squad player during the promotion season. He got the odd game after promotion but fell out of favour by then.

ON THIS DAY

  • 1898 Goalkeeper Ernest Blackham is born.
  • 2016 Port Vale confirm that Adam Yates, Ryan Lloyd and Omar Haughton have agreed new deals with the club.
  • 2018 Midfielder Lewis Hardcastle is born

Our scouting system is improving if we're spotting them this young.
