Next Seasons Forward Line Up

The Hov

Recommended Posts

With the forward line up taking shape nicely with the signings of Cullen and Bennett over the past few days, I'm wondering what the forward line up will be for the starting game next season. Presuming Askey goes with his favoured 433 line up, would you:

- start Pope/Cullen/Bennett with Worrall & winger yet to be signed either side of him, with the other 2 strikers on the bench.

- try and fit Cullen in with either Pope/Bennett and a winger (with one of the strikers being slightly out of position).

- go with a 442 with 2 out and out strikers.

Askey favours 4/3/3 and given the forwards signed up Pope/Miller are different options at centre forward while Montano/Bennett would presumably be the options on the left and Worral/Cullen on the right of the front three.

Bennett has mostly played on the left of a front three in that inside forward/wide forward role

and could be direct competition for Montano while Cullen can play inside right and is a clever player who will link play and could be seen as competition for Worrall on the right of a front three.

Both Cullen and Bennett are mobile and hard working while Miller offers something different

to Pope with pace in behind infact all can play central while having the mobility and work ethic

to play inside forward in an Askey front three.

It will be interesting to see if Askey signs Durrell who is like Worrall a winger who can also play in a midfield three and likewise has high workrate and tenacity.

However the midfield players signed up all seem to be technically good and mobile and while

Joyce is seen as the central holding midfielder Conlon has played the role and can possibly

play the role of deep playmaker with a usefull passing range....of the others a fit Oyeleke

is one of the first names on the team sheet while Burgess can supply trusted cover.

Lloyd was a highly rated Port Vale youth team winger scouted by Arsenal who went on to play midfield for Chester and Macclesfield...Askey seems to rate the lad now 25 who has gained much

experience and game time and won promotion....kinda similar to Hannant being mobile and very hard working but perhaps for Askey Lloyd has a better skill set in terms of first touch and ball control but also mostly an ability to get the head up and see a pass....in short Lloyd has a good left foot and possibly better end product than Hannant for a lot less money.

While not to forget another attacking midfielder in Trickett-Smith who could be a usefull squad player it would seem that the midfield will be mobile and the front three fluid and there could be goals in the side.

I guess a preference for 4-3-3 would rule out a proper winger.

Plenty of so called wingers play in a front three but they have to also be able to play as an inside forward and in short score goals but equally many a number 10 or inside forward must

also have the mobility and work rate to track back and supply width as well as goals.

Anyway its good to know that Barca/Bayern/Citeh/Pool all play 4/3/3 also known as"Askeyball".

("Askeyball" is a system of 4/3/3 football whereby a midfield three move side to side and a front three move side to side and is believed to have been discovered in a public house on the Staffordshire/Cheshire borders in an alcohol enthused vision while playing Space Invaders.)

Given what a lot of people have been saying, I think you can rule Miller out of any permutations. Saw something today saying he is banned from football for 2 years. Has anyone else heard this?

Spot on that

If Monty can stay fit that's a front three in which all three forwards have the potential to get 10+ goals and that's something we haven't had for a while. Bennett too falls into that category. It's much better than for the past 3 seasons when Pope has done the scoring on his own. It means we'll also have someone on the bench to bring on and affect the game.
