I don't think we know our line up for our first game.

Maybe Bennett can play down the left in a forward three. Or is this other striker nailed on to start alongside Pope. A lot of decisions to be made still.

Just as interesting is to ponder the make-up of the whole team, presuming we stick with 4.3.3.

Brown

Gibbons/X

Legge/Kennedy/Smith

Crookes

Joyce

Oyeleke

Conlon

Can Lloyd or Burgess muscle in there? Do we need another better midfield player who scores goals? I would suggest that we do.

Worrall

Pope

Bennett/X/Monty

If we're after a winger, where will he fit in?

It's quite hard to select a nailed on XI at this stage. Half the places seem up for grabs for me.

But it would be a bit disappointing if we don't sign at least one better midfielder and at least one better striker than we had last season.

What do you think?

Some potential there, but still lacking more pace and goals from last season.

I would like to see 4 new first team players at the minimum.

Brown / New young backup keeper

Gibbons/ New RB (ideally a bit more physical and experienced)

Legge/Kennedy/Smith / New CB with aerial presence.

Crookes / New LB that can provide an attacking outlet.

Joyce / New DM (more height and strength)

Oyeleke

Conlon / New goal scoring midfielder.

Worrall / New RW with pace)

Pope / Bennett / New Striker

Monty / New LW with pace)

TheSage in reply Bennett can play left front three and as a thumbnail sketch the squad for that Askey 4/3/3 could be...

.....................................Brown(Trialist)...........................................

Gibbons/Clark................Legge/Kennedy/Smith/Trialist...............Crookes/Campbell-Gordon

...................Oyleke/Burgess......Joyce/Conlon........Lloyd/Trickett-Smith................

.............Worral/Cullen...........Pope/Miller....................Montano/Bennett.............

Askey says they will look at trialists in pre-season and obviously a second keeper and a fourth choice centre back would probably complete the defence if Clark signs.

The midfield three hopefully Oyeleke can stay fit but Burgess breaking forward would presumably

give cover....Trickett-Smith could likewise offer cover on the left for either Conlon or Lloyd

and either could cover for Joyce in so called holding midfield.

The front three kinda was Worrall/Pope/Montano but could also have options from say Cullen if

signed on the right and Bennett on the left of that front three not to forget Miller.

So if it is Cullen signing that would presumably complete the frontline just leaving the question of Whitfield...and likewise Rawlinson at the back...but if Clark signs and Askey

gets a spare keeper sorted in pre-season and a fourth choice centre back then even without

the two transfer listed players that is a 22 man squad with cover in every position for 4/3/3.

Askey had intimated that Whitfield and Rawlinson will be replaced once they get fixed up and if not they stay but there has been interest...it seems Askey is being carefull with the new owners money in not signing replacements untill they are off the books....which might account for not

signing Howkins and the seeming delay over Cullen maybe.

So perhaps a squad as small as 22 players or under 25 anyway makes a difference from the over blown squads of well over 30 players but a final point we know Askey favours 4/3/3 as a system

and perhaps the three in centre midfield need to be mobile and more technical in moving the ball

such that the holding midfielder of old is a thing of the past in terms of a passing game moving

the ball forward with a mobile front three....but does that squad perhaps not need cover for Joyce at holding midfield perhaps another pacey winger type and maybe cover at left back for a

fully rounded squad of 25.

I think it's too early to say at the moment, even with Cullen's signing, though that makes us look a lot stronger up front. Last season our problem was in midfield where we spent a lot of time defending and very little creating chances, so that's where we need to strengthen, even now. We still don't look to have a box to box midfielder who is going to give us real steel through the middle, helping us to defend and creating chances. Hopefully, we'll sign someone like Durrell or we'll see real improvement in an injury-free Oyeleke or Conlon will come on apace. But that's where the problem lies for me - central midfield and still unsolved.

One positive note for me about Askey is that he seems to be able to get more out of the team than on paper, which would be a big step forward, as we've been less than the sum of our parts for the last three seasons. Team spirit, confidence, energy and cohesion will go a long way in L2. Askey showed he could do it with Macc in non-league. The challenge for him now is to do it in the league.

But for that, we still need a bit more strengthening, imho.

Find it really interesting that the average age of that 22 man squad is currently 26, (25 if we sign Mitch Clark)with 9 players aged 26 or under. Also interesting to see that the average age of our midfield players is 24, so aiming to have a fit youthful looking midfield players who can get up and down the park. Finally, average age of our forward players is 29, so more experience and nous in attack to improve that goal return. Amazing when we have a transfer strategy in place isn't it!
